via Saint Leo press release   SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo men’s lacrosse alumni, Joe Espinosa ’10 has been selected to represent Puerto Rico at the 2018 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Men’s Lacrosse World Championship in the country’s first-ever appearance. Saint Leo Head Coach Brad Jorgensen expressed, “We are proud to see Joe representing Puerto Rico in the World Games. His passion for lacrosse and our university is contagious, and we are thankful for it.” Former Saint Leo short stick midfielder, Espinosa was one of 30 players selected to the Puerto Rico roster, which was announced on January 10, after the national team hosted a two-day tryout. According to Puerto Rico’s lacrosse webpage (http://laxallstars.com/puerto-rico-lacrosse-2018-roster), Jeff Ramos, Head Coach of Puerto Rico’s Men’s National Team commented, “The selection process was more difficult than I expected. I could not have been more pleased with the effort of all our players.” Addressing the selection of Puerto Rico’s First Men’s National Team, Ramos said, “We had two goals in mind. First was to select a team we believe will be competitive at the World Championships. The second and just as important, was to establish a base group of young players we could build future National Teams around. Getting our younger players valuable international experience is key to achieving that long term goal.” The 2018 FIL Men’s Lacrosse World Championship will be held on July 12-21, 2018 in Netanya, Israel in Netanya Stadium. The worldwide competition will showcase 50 participating countries.
