Tars Close Regular Season with a 13-4 Win over Palm Beach Atlantic

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (April 21, 2018) – Closing out their 2018 regular season schedule with a road game against Palm Beach Atlantic, the Rollins men’s lacrosse team earned a 13-4 win over the Sailfish at PBA Lacrosse Field on Saturday night.  The win closes out the Tars’ regular season with an overall record of 7-6, and a Sunshine State Conference mark of 4-3.  Palm Beach Atlantic wraps up their inaugural season with a record of 4-12 overall, and 1-6 in SSC play. The Tars’ overall record of 7-6 marks just the second time in program history that Rollins has close out its regular season with a winning record.  The last time the Tars finished their regular season above the .500 mark was in 2016, where they concluded their regular season schedule with a record of 9-5, and 3-2 in the SSC. Rollins went on that year to take down Saint Leo in the first round of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament before losing to Tampa in the SSC Tournament Championship game, concluding the year with an overall record of 10-6. The Tars shone on both ends of the field when it came to extra-man and man-down opportunities.  Rollins scored of 4-of-6 man-up opportunities, while a man-down defensive unit held the Sailfish silent on all five extra-man breaks. Joey Cinque led the way with a game high four goals, followed by Greg Taicher and Connor Ashton with a hat trick apiece.  Ashton added an assist for a four-point performance, while Eric NeCAmp, Grant Long, and Parker Mosackscored one goal each.  Jeremy Slocumb and Tommy Keane each dished out a game high two assists, while Blake Buell earned one assist of his own.  Three Tars earned five ground balls each, as Kyle SudolEvan Schimek, and Lucas Brush amassed five apiece.  Leading the team in caused turnovers on the night was Schimek with four, while Sudol won 12-of-18 faceoff attempts.  In goal, senior Andrew Hoemann earned eight saves in 60 minutes of action for a save percentage of .667 on the night.  Hoemann faced 12 shots and allowed only four goals, holding the Sailfish off the board in both the first and fourth quarters. Palm Beach Atlantic saw a team best three goals from Blake Israel, followed by one goal by Thomas Pinel, all of which were unassisted.  Ben Savick earned a game high seven ground balls, followed by Alex Aken with four.  Colin Hayek amassed a team best three caused turnovers.  In goal, Savick faced a total of 35 shots from the Tars, earning 22 saves while allowing 13 goals in 60 minutes of action. HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • First Quarter:  The Tars held the Sailfish off of the board throughout the first 15 minutes of action, and notched three goals to take a 3-0 lead at the end of the period.  Cinque notched the first goal of the game off of an assist by Slocumb on a man-up opportunity with 7:19 on the clock, and Grant Long notched the Tars’ second goal of the game with 6:18 left in the period.  Ashton secured the final goal of the quarter, scoring with 1:59 to go to give the Tars a 3-0 lead entering into the first break.
  • Second Quarter:  Cinque again got the ball rolling in the quarter, scoring at the 7:40 mark off of another assist by Slocumb to take a 4-0 lead, but the Sailfish answered right back with an unassisted goal by Israel just 34 seconds later to pull PBA back to within three, 4-1.  A little over four minutes ran off the clock before the Tars were able to find the back of the net, but a goal by Cinque off of an assist by Keane put Rollins ahead, 5-1, with 2:58 to go before the break.  A late goal by Taicher with 28 seconds to go secured a 6-1 lead for Rollins at the half.
  • Third Quarter:  The Sailfish entered into the third quarter with a vengeance, scorning two straight thantks to Israel to pull to within three, 6-3, with 10:33 on the clock.  Cinque broke PBA’s run thanks to an assist by Ashton, to give the Tars a 7-3 lead with 7:23 left in the quarter, and a goal by Ashton at the 4:34 mark gave Rollins a five goal advantage once again with a score fo 8-3.  Pinel netted the Sailfish’s fourth goal of the game with 42 seconds remaining, closing out the third stanza with the Tars holding onto an 8-4 lead.
  • Fourth Quarter:  Ashton got the scoring started in the fourth quarter, finding the back of the net at the 12:57 mark to give the Tars a 9-4 lead, and NeCamp extended the Tars’ advantage at the 6:47 mark to set the score at 10-4.  Taicher netted the next two, with his second consecutive goal off of an assist by NeCamp to give the Tars a 12-4 lead with 5:11 to play.  Mosack netted the Tars’ final goal of the game, finding the back of the net with 28 seconds to go to close out the game with a 13-4 advantage.
  NOTES:
  • Rollins now owns the overall series against the Sailfish, 1-0.
  • The 2018 season marks the first official year of varsity competition for the Palm Beach Atlantic men’s lacrosse team.  The Sailfish finished the season ranked seventh out of eight teams in the Sunshine State Conference after defeating fellow first-year program Embry-Riddle by a score of 11-5 on Saturday, March 17.
  • Rollins closed out their 2018 regular season with a road record of 2-4, but a home mark of 5-2.
  • The Sailfish closed out their inaugural season with a record of 3-5 when playing on their home field.
  • Parker Mosack scored his second goal of the season
  • Cinque notched his second straight game with four goals
  • Taicher’s two assists mark the fifth time this season he’s dished out two
  • Tommy Keane matched a season high two assists

Men’s Lacrosse Season Ends Against Rollins

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic men’s lacrosse closed out their first season on Saturday at the Rinker Athletic Campus against Rollins, losing to the Tars 13-4.

The Sailfish fell behind 3-0 after the first period and were down 4-0 before Blake Israel got the ‘Fish on the board midway through the second. PBA trailed 6-1 at halftime but Israel scored twice early in the third to pull the Sailfish to their closest point since the early moments.

The Tars answered with two goals of their own before Thomas Pinel scored in the latter stages of the third period. For Pinel it was his fifth goal of the season. That’s all the ‘Fish were able to get as the Tars shutout PBA in the fourth, scoring five times.

The Sailfish were outshot 53-20 as the Tars peppered the Sailfish goal all night long. PBA’s Ben Savick made a season-high 22 saves. He also led the team with seven ground balls. Alex Aken added four ground balls while Colin Hayek had three ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Israel finishes his first season at PBA with 16 goals and two hat-tricks after also recording one against Montevallo in the team’s first win in February.

The Sailfish close the season with a 4-12 record overall and a 1-6 mark in the Sunshine State Conference.
