Panthers Roll to Statement Win Over Rollins

Six different Florida Tech players had a hat-trick on Saturday, as the Panthers rolled to a 21-12 victory over the eighth-ranked Rollins College Tars, who were coming off an upset of the number one team in the country, Florida Southern, on Wednesday.

“They’re a great team, we respect them like crazy and I knew it was gonna be a battle,” said Panthers coach Corinne Desrosiers. “They always give us a game.”

Before Saturday, the most goals Rollins (12-3, 2-2 SSC) had allowed in a game this year was 15, against defending national champion, Adelphi. On Saturday, they allowed 16 in the second half alone. “This is probably our best win all year,” Desrosiers said. “Nobody runs the clock on Rollins and we got to do it today.” Lauren Tybor finished the day with four goals to lead the Panthers, but this was a total team effort. Caroline DunleavySara GrenierAlexis TownsendMollie Kaplan, and Sam Schiano had three goals each, while Mary Gormley chipped in with two. Stephanie Stuart was amazing in goal for the Panthers, particularly in the second half when she came up with eight saves. Eighth-Ranked Tars Unable to Stage Comeback Against No. 5 Florida Tech

  MELBOURNE, Fla.  (April 7, 2018) – With a save at the 26:24 mark in the second half, senior goalie Malorie Olin became the program’s all-time leader in career saves, notching 464 saves to surpass former standout Elyse De Lisle who racked up 463 in her career.  Despite the career milestone for Olin, the eighth-ranked Rollins women’s lacrosse team was unable to topple the fifth-ranked Florida Tech Panthers on Saturday afternoon, falling by a score of 21-12. The loss snaps an 11-game win streak and drops the Tars to a mark of 12-3 and 2-2 in Sunshine State Conference action.  Florida Tech wins their third straight and advances to 12-1, and 2-1 in SSC play.     Olin finished the day with eight saves, moving her career total to 466, and added four ground balls.  Leading the Tars in goals and overall points was sophomore Hannah Ashton, who netted four goals and added one assist for five points.  Kallie German scored two goals and added two assists for four points, while Paige Brock notched a hat trick on the day.  Maggie Dougherty and Megan Cury notched a goal and an assist each, while Hannah Coakley scored a goal of her own.  Julianna DeSimone dished out two assists to wrap up the Tars’ scoring efforts on the day.  Lindsay Van Beck led the team in ground balls with six, followed by Olin and German with four apiece.  Off the draw, German led the team with four, followed by Dougherty and Ashton with three each.  Van Beck earned a new career high with five caused turnovers, followed by Maddie Hendren, who also tallied a new career high as she caused four turnovers on the afternoon. The Panthers were led by Lauren Tybor with four goals, while Sam Schiano, Mollie Kaplan, Alexis Townsend, Caroline Dunleavy, and Sara Grenier scored three goals each.  Mary Gormley wrapped up the Panthers’ goal count with two of her own.  Schiano and Dunleavy led the team in assists with two apiece.  Haley Heggblod led the squad with six ground balls, followed by Schiano with five.  Off the draw, Tybor led the game with 12 draw controls, while Schiano earned four.  Leading the team in caused turnovers was Brittney Embree with three.  Stephanie Stuart played a full 60 minutes in cage, earning 13 saves while allowing 12 goals.   HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • First Half:  Florida Tech opened up to a 5-1 lead with 16:58 on the clock in the first half, but Rollins answered back and scored four straight throughout the remainder of the half to set the score at 5-5 at the break.
  • Second Half:  The second half opened up with 10 goals scored in the first 10 minutes of action.  The Panthers opened up the second stanza with four straight to take a 9-5 lead with 25:47 on the clock, but the Tars fought back, scoring three of their own to pull to within one, 9-8, with 23:43 to go.  Florida Tech retaliated with three goals in 59 seconds, giving the Panthers a 12-8 lead with 22:11 on the clock, but Ashton broke the run with a goal off of an assist by Dougherty at the 17:09 mark to pull the Tars back to within three, 12-9.  FIT hit their stride in the second portion of the half, outscoring the Tars 9-3 to secure the 21-12 victory.
  NOTES:
  • Since their first meeting in 2015, the Tars and Panthers have matched up six times, with the series record tied at 3-3.  When playing at the home of the Panthers in regular season, the Tars are 2-1 against FIT.
  • The Tars entered into the week sitting 8th on the IWLCA Division II Coaches Poll, and sit 9th on the NIKE/US Lacrosse Division II Top 20.
  • Florida Tech was given the nod at No. 5 on both the IWLCA DII Poll, as well as the NIKE/USL Top 20 this week.
  • The Panthers snapped an 11-game winning streak for the Tars.
  • Lindsay Van Beck earned a new career high in caused turnovers with five, good for third in program record books for caused turnovers in a game.
  • Maddie Hendren earned a career high of four caused turnovers, which is good for ninth in program records for caused turnovers in a game.
  • Malorie Olin became the program’s all-time leader in saves.
  • Career Records to Watch:
    • Hannah Ashton currently sits 13th in program record books for career points (95), eighth in career goals (90), and 12th in draw controls (62)
    • Sophomore Maggie Dougherty has amassed 74 draw controls in her career, placing her in 10th in program record books.  She has also dished out 27 assists, good for 12th in program records.
    • Kallie German ranks first in the program record books for free-position goals scored, having earned 56 in her career, and also now leads the program in game-winning goals, with 14.  The junior also ranks fourth for career goals scored with 136, fourth in career assists with 66, and has moved into second in career points with 202.  German also ranks 18th in draw controls with 42.
    • Malorie Olin became the program’s all-time leader in saves, surpassing Elyse De Lisle `14, who notched 463 in her career.  Olin now has 466 saves in her career.  Olin also ranks 10th in ground balls, having earned 100 in her career.
    • Lindsay Van Beck has moved into third in program record books for caused turnovers in a career with 79, and ranks 17th in ground balls with 72.
    • Brenna Heaney sits seventh in program record books for career caused turnovers, with 50, and 18th in ground balls with 70.
    • Paige Brock ranks 12th in program record books for points with 104, 12th in goals scored with 78, and 15th in assists with 26.  She also sits tied in 14th with teammate Maddie Hendren for draw controls with 56.
    • Megan Cury ranks 19th in program records for goals scored, having scored 49.
    • Lily Rizk has earned 43 draw controls in her career, placing her in 17th in program record books.
    • Maddie Hendren ranks 14th in program record books for draw controls (56), 15th in ground balls with 77, and 12th in caused turnovers with 40.
    • Haley Brock currently sits 20th in the record books for caused turnovers with 28.
