Florida Tech Picks Up First SSC Win in Rout of PBA

  Dunn, Kaplan and Townsend combine for 24 points in the Panthers 20-7 victory over the Sailfish MELBOURNE, Fla. – Florida Tech made easy work of Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday as the Panthers rolled to their first SSC win of the season, defeating the Sailfish, 20-7, under the lights at Panther Stadium. The Crimson & Gray were led offensively by their triple threat on attack. Leah Dunn guided the group with a career-high 10 points on six goals and four assists. The senior’s point total ranks third on the program’s single-game scoring list. Mollie Kaplan tied a program single-game record with seven goals against PBA, in addition to grabbing four ground balls and three draw controls. Alexis Townsend did much of her work tonight quarterbacking the offense from behind the goal. She ended up tying a career-high with five assists to go along with two goals in the win. Sam Schiano scored a pair of goals while also collecting six draw controls, three ground balls, and three caused turnovers. Kailee O’Brien finished with a goal, three ground balls, two draws, and two caused turnovers, while Aleah Fjelstad and Hunter Cairo scored one goal apiece. Olivia Going guided the defense with five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Brittney Embree was also a force on the defensive end as she posted three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Chloe Zador made seven saves in goal while picking up her sixth win of the season. Dunn kicked off the scoring with an unassisted goal just 68 seconds into the contest. However, PBA quickly tied it up at 1-1 less than a minute later. Later in the half, Dunn found a cutting Schiano for the goal to put Tech ahead, 2-1. Dunn then found the back of the net off an assist from Townsend to make the score, 3-1, with 19:49 left in the first half. After the Sailfish made it a one-goal game, 3-2, Florida Tech ensued on a 6-0 run and grabbed a 9-2 advantage with 10:22 remaining. PBA responded with its own 3-0 run, including a pair of unassisted tallies by Shayna Rogers, to trim the margin to four, 9-5, with 6:15 to go before halftime. Tech again answered with a 6-0 run, this one stretching into the second half, to corral a 15-5 lead and force running time. The Sailfish got back on the board with just over 20 minutes left off a goal by Grace Bartlinski. The Panthers were able to tack on three more scores to push the lead to 18-6 with 11:59 remaining. Following PBA’s final score of the game with 5:27 left, Dunn found Kaplan for the record-tying goal with 3:16 to go. Cairo then netted an unassisted goal late in the game to seal the deal for the Panthers. Florida Tech more than doubled-up the Sailfish in shots (35-17) and ground balls (26-12). PBA ended with more draw controls (15-13). The Panthers were highly successful on clear attempts, converting 19-of-21 compared to 10-of-17 for the Sailfish. Tech will look to make it two wins in a row when the Panthers travel to Daytona Beach this Saturday, Apr. 13, for an SSC matchup with Embry-Riddle at 4 p.m. at the ERAU Lacrosse Field. Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Florida Tech

 

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic women’s lacrosse dropped a Sunshine State Conference game 20-7 to Florida Tech on Wednesday, as PBA falls to 5-7 overall and 0-4 in SSC play. Florida Tech improves to 6-7 with the SSC victory.

The Sailfish trailed 12-5 at the half as FIT got off to a hot start offensively on the evening.  Shayna Rogers had two goals on three shots in the opening 30 minutes, while Anna Laskaris added two goals of her own in the first half.

Grace Bartlinski and Kiki Cinotti scored goals for the Sailfish in the second half, as Cinotti finished with two goals and an assist in the game.

The Sailfish didn’t have an answer for Molly Kaplan from FIT on the night, who scored seven goals in the game.  Leah Dunn added six goals and two assists for the Panthers.

Abigal Nehring and Chanel Nassir led the ‘Fish with three ground balls each in the game while Nassir led the Sailfish with three caused turnovers.

The Sailfish will be back in action on Saturday, April 13 as they will travel to Tampa for a 1 p.m. game against the No. 5 ranked Spartans.
