BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic women’s lacrosse team made history for its program against Lynn (1-2, 1-2 SSC) on Wednesday.
The Sailfish notched their first Sunshine State Conference win in program history against the Fighting Knights. PBA (1-1, 1-1 SSC) overcame a 10-6 halftime deficit to earn a 17-14 victory. The ‘Fish, who outscored Lynn 11-4 in the second half, were led by Anna Laskaris who scored a team-high five goals.
Kiki Cinotti took her usual role as the facilitator for the ‘Fish, dishing out six assists to go with three goals. Grace Bartlinski added three goals of her own on four shots with one assist. Nicole Townsend tallied two goals while Kate Leblanc, Chelsea Smith, Lindsey Heffler and Katie Karlsen all found the back of the net in the contest. Jillian Kolakowski led the ‘Fish with two ground balls while Brooke Schoch recorded a team-high two caused turnovers for the PBA defense.
The Fighting Knights struck first in the game, finding the back of the net in the first 30 seconds of action. Lynn pulled away in the middle of the half thanks to a 6-2 run in a 10-minute span, three of which coming off of Sailfish turnovers. Lynn went into the break leading 10-6.
PBA came out firing on all cylinders to start the second half. Laskaris started the half with a goal, followed quickly by a pair of goals from Bartlinksi which made it a 10-9 game. The Fighting Knights padded their lead, making it 12-9 with 20 minutes remaining. The Sailfish refused to let their foot off the gas, answering with a 7-0 run, including four goals from Laskaris. Her final goal of the game gave the ‘Fish a 16-12 lead with 10 minutes left in the game.
PBA’s stout defense preserved the lead down the stretch as the Fighting Knights were unable to mount a comeback. The Sailfish held on for the 17-14 lead. Abigal Nehring earned the win in goal, totaling 10 saves. The Sailfish dominated draw controls for the match, outmatching Lynn 22-9. PBA was able to complete its comeback despite totaling 27 turnovers compared to Lynn’s 16.
The Sailfish face a tough test in the form of No. 5 Florida Southern on Saturday. The game in Lakeland, Fla. takes place at 5 p.m.
