Florida Tech closes out non-conference schedule with 23-8 road win over Shorter on Monday

FIRST QUARTER:

  • It was a back-and-forth first 15 minutes between the Panthers and Hawks with the teams combining to score 10 goals in the first quarter.
  • Kayla Minton scored the game’s opening goal with 12:42 left in the frame.
  • After Shorter took a 2-1 lead, Rachel Johnson and Minton tallied consecutive goals over a 31-second span to give Tech a 3-2 edge with 6:06 to. 
  • Boyle netted a free-position goal to put the Panthers up 4-3 with 4:27 to remaining. 
  • Hawks tied the game at 4-4, but Tech responded with a goal from Karly Liebendorfer, off an assist from Carly NiroCharlotte Hardie then scored a free position tally at the buzzer to hand the Panthers a 6-4 advantage heading into the second quarter.  

SECOND QUARTER:

  • Panthers scored the first 7 goals of the second quarter to push their lead to 13-4 with 8:09 left in the first half. 
  • Boyle scored twice and dished out an assist during the run, securing her first half hat trick with 8:09 to go in the frame. Niro, Millie Hurt, Minton, Caroline MacLeod and Hardie all tallied one goal during the spree. 
  • MacLeod’s second of the game put Tech up 14-5 with 4:31 remaining in the half. 
  • Niro then scored off an assist from Hardie with just over three minutes to go and the Panthers carried a 15-5 lead into halftime. 

THIRD QUARTER: 

  • Panthers dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Hawks 6-0 to push the margin to 21-6 heading into the fourth. 
  • Minton scored twice and handed out an assist in the quarter while Johnson, Boyle, Kailee O’Brien and Liebendorfer tallied one goals apiece.

FOURTH QUARTER:

  • Kasia Lorenc scored her second goal of the season to open the fourth quarter.
  • Elizabeth Christ tallied the final goal of the game on a free position attempt, and the Panthers went on to win their last non-conference game by a 15-goal margin and improve to 3-0 on the road this season.  
     

NOTABLE PANTHERS:

  • Kayla Minton led all players with 6 points on 5 goals and 1 assist with 2 caused turnovers and a draw control.
  • Jennifer Boyle recorded 5 points on 4 goals and 1 assist to go along with 3 ground balls and a draw control.
  • Rachel Johnson and Carly Niro each tallied 2 goals and 2 assists.
  • Charlotte Hardie finished with 2 goals and 1 assist.
  • Caroline MacLeod added 2 goals, 5 ground balls and 2 draw controls. 
  • Karly Liebendorfer had 2 goals and 2 draw controls.
  • Millie Hurt ended with a goal and 7 draw controls.
  • All three Panther goalies saw time in the contest. Cailey Canessa picked up her 7th win of the season while making 2 saves. Kellen Lucchesi made 4 saves and Emily Harris finished with 1 save.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

  • Panthers finished with an edge in shots (46-17), shots on goal (39-15), ground balls (20-13) and draw controls (23-8). 
  • Tech was successful on 10-11 clears compared to 10-15 for the Hawks.
  • Panthers converted 6-11 free position attempts and Shorter made 1-3.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Florida Tech improves to 7-0 for just the second time in program history, joining the 2018 squad that opened the season 9-0.
  • Panthers conclude non-conference play with a 7-0 record. The only other time Florida Tech has gone undefeated before conference play is in 2018 when the team posted a 9-0 record. 
  • Tech tied a program record for draw controls in a game with 23 against the Hawks, tying the mark set by the Panthers on March 30, 2018, against CSU Pueblo and April 14, 2018 at Tampa.
  • Florida Tech’s 23 goals ties for third most in a game in program history. Panthers also scored 23 goals on March 30, 2018, against CSU Pueblo, April 11, 2018 at PBA, April 14, 2018 vs. Embry-Riddle and April 21, 2018 at Saint Leo. The program record for most goals in a game is 24. 
  • This is the third time this season that Tech has collected 20 draw controls. The Panthers had 20 draws against Flagler on Feb. 17 and 22 versus Findlay on March 2.
  • Tech set season-highs with 46 shots and 39 shots on goal. The 46 shots also rank 2nd most in a game in program history. 

UP NEXT: Florida Tech opens SSC play on Saturday, April 2 hosting No. 13 Embry-Riddle at Panther Stadium. The matchup is set to begin at 1 p.m.

No. 17 Panthers Scoring Barrage Buries Shorter

The 17th-ranked Florida Tech women’s lacrosse team made their trip to Rome Georgia well worth it on Monday, beating the Shorter Hawks  23-8 in the Panthers’ final non-conference game of the season. The win moves Tech to 7-0 this season, while Shorter falls to 2-8.

Kayla Minton led the Panthers with five goals and an assist, giving her 26 goals for the season. Jennifer Boyle had four goals and an assist in this contest, including her 20th of the season. Carolie MacLeodKarly LiebendorferCharlotte Hardie, and Carly Niro had two goals each. The Panthers had six players score a single goal including sophomores Maggie Reed and Elizabeth Christ both tallying their first of the season.

Maria Hansen scored half of the Hawk’s goals with Olivia Contento scoring twice.

Makala McKinney went the distance in net for Shorter, making 16 saves. Cailey Canessa started for Florida Tech, playing about a quarter and a half.
