Saints late rally falls short against Mavericks

by Grace Schwab

ST AUGUSTINE. – Trace McDonald led Flagler College with six goals and three assists in a 12-11 loss to Colorado Mesa University in a non-conference men’s lacrosse game Wednesday night at the Flagler Lacrosse field.

The Mavericks improve to 4-3 overall leaving the Saints 4-6 for the season so far.

The Saints started with a 3-2 lead in the first quarter thanks to goals from McDonald and Blake Gonzalez.

However, the Mavericks began to pull away scoring four consecutive goals to end the first half 7-4, the Mavericks maintained a lead the entire game.

Flagler rallied in the fourth quarter, pulling to within one (11-10) after Geraint Shaw’s goal with 3:27 left in the game. But Logan Smith’s goal with 2:11 remaining gave Colorado Mesa just enough insurance. The Mavericks needed that as McDonald got the Saints back to one (12-11) with 1:45 left in the game.

Although they fell short by just a point the Saints defense performed well with Matt Mitrega winning nine faceoffs and goalie Nate Lehr making 13 saves. Brandon Grusholt and Willy Bateman each had five ground balls.

JJ Brummett and Hunter Holcomb each scored three goals for Colorado Mesa. Mavericks goalie Luke Parrish came out with 10 saves.

The Saints will return on March 30 at noon to kick off Peach Belt Conference competition as well as we celebrate “Senior Day” in a home game against The University of Alabama in Huntsville.
