Florida Tech Picks up First Win of Richardson Era; Minton Tallies Career Point No.100

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Florida Tech women’s lacrosse program traveled down to Palm Beach Atlantic on Tuesday night to take on the Sailfish in a non-conference match. Against the Sailfish, the Panthers managed to come away with the big 20-10 win, their first of the season and the first under Head Coach Kelsey Richardson

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Florida Tech 20, Palm Beach Atlantic 10
Records: Florida Tech (1-1, 0-0 SSC), PBA (0-1, 0-0 SSC)
Locations: PBA Soccer/Lacrosse Field | West Palm Beach, Fla.  

FIRST QUARTER:

  • The Panthers were the first to score in the contest as Carly Niro recorded her first goal of the season.
  • Less than a minute later, PBA responded scoring a goal of their own.
  • Tech and the Sailfish would trade pairs of goals with Kayla Minto scoring first on an assist by Sophia Scichilone before Scichilone recorded a goal of her own before PBA responded to make it 3-3.
  • Another pair of goals by the Panthers would put them ahead 5-3, as Charlotte Hardie tallied her second goal of the season before Scichilone recorded her second goal of the game with a woman-up goal, assisted by Caroline Finn.
  • The Sailfish would go on to score with 4:27 remaining in the quarter before Carly Niro would score on a woman-up goal, assisted by Finn prior to Michaela Wittman tallying her first goal of the game on an assist from Karly Liebendorfer to end the quarter and give Tech a 7-4 lead after the end of the first.

SECOND QUARTER:

  • Niro would start the second just like she started the first by scoring the opening goal of the quarter unassisted, her third of the game, before Jennie Boyle would find the back of the net for the first time this season 1:14 later.
  • With Tech ahead 9-4, PBA would tack on two goals less than 45 seconds apart before Niro tallied her fourth goal of the contest with 4:09 to play before the half, assisted by Carly Niro.
  • Scichilone went on to score her third goal of the game, and the final goal for the Panthers In the second quarter as PBA would score the final goal of the half with 3:00 to play giving Tech a 11-7 lead after two quarters.

THIRD QUARTER:

  • Emma Angelo’s first goal of the season came 49 seconds into the third with Kayla Minton picking up her first assist of the season.
  • Wittman’s second goal of the contest came less than a minute later to make it 13-7, Florida Tech before PBA would score with 10:39 to go in the third.
  • Kayla Minton’s second goal of the game would spark a Panthers scoring streak to end the third with Scichilone recording back-to-back goals and Minton closing out the third with her third goal of the evening to make it 17-8.

FOURTH QUARTER: 

  • Quarter number four would start out with Gillian Craig finding the back of the goal for her first of the season of an assist by Karly Liebendorfer to start the running clock as the Panthers would take a 10-goal lead, 18-8.
  • Liebendorfer third goal this season would make it 19-8 with Scichilone tallying the assist before the Sailfish would score with 8:13 left in the quarter to cut it’s deficit back to 10.
  • Caroline Finn  would be the fifth Panther to record her first goal of the season on a woman up goal exactly four minutes after PBA’s previous goal to make it 20-9 before the Sailfish would score the final goal of the contest and give the Panthers a 20-10 victory.

NOTABLE PANTHERS:

  • In a night of heavy offense, Sophia Scichilone would be the Crimson and Gray’s top goal scorer with 8 points from five goals and three assists while also leading the team with six shots on goal.
  • Carly Niro would have an impressive night as well tallying four goals and one assist for five total points while Kayla Minton would tally a total of four points from three goals and four assists.
  • Minton and Lizzy Christ would both lead the team with three total ground balls with Christ also tallying a team high two caused turnovers.
  • Sofie Bender, Minton and Angelo would also lead the team with each recording a total of two  ground balls.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • Following her three-goal performance, Minton has achieved a career milestone, recording a total of 100 career points.
  • With her assist tonight, Carly Niro moves up in the record book becoming the ninth player on program history with 30 or more assists.
  • Head Coach Kelsey Richardson recorded the first win as a head coach of her collegiate career.
  • The Panthers now improve to an undefeated 7-0 Al-Time record against PBA and 4-0 all time in West Palm Beach against the Sailfish.
  • In team stats, Florida Tech recorded 38 shots, seven saves, 13 turnovers, were 10-13 on clear attempts, tallied 18 ground balls and won 17 draw controls while finishing 2-5 on free position shots.
  • The Sailfish managed to record 22 shots, make 11 saves, turned the ball over 19 time, were just 5-12 on clear attempts, picked up 12 ground balls, had a close split with Tech winning 16 draw controls while going 50% at 2-4 on converting free position shots.

UP NEXT: Florida Tech will be back in action Friday night for it’s first home contest of the season in an Exhibition contest against the England National Team on February 9th a 7:00 P.M. at Rick Stottler Field.
