CLEVELAND, Tenn. – In the first-ever meeting between Florida Southern College and Lee University in women’s lacrosse, a strong second half pushed the third-ranked Moccasins over the Flames 15-9 at the Ray Conn Sports Complex.
Florida Southern held a 7-6 lead at halftime but used a 5-2 third quarter to break away from Lee. The Mocs closed with a 3-1 fourth period for a six-goal win on the road.
Graduate student Hailey Daleo led the Moccasins (4-0) on the day with five points off four goals and one assist. Graduate student Lizzy Lynch was close behind with four points, two goals, and two assists, ahead of graduate Jackie Stoller and senior Madison Tare each with three points. Stoller finished the road game with two goals and one assist while Tare had three goals in her first action of the season.
Sophomore Rylie Rittberg got the nod and earned the win in the cage for the Mocs, making eight stops to the Flames’ 17 shots on goal.
Four other Mocs found the back of the net Saturday in senior Sammy Gorrasi, junior Abby McFerren, sophomore Ellie Griffin, and freshman Casey Falduto.
The Flames were led by the Luzier sisters, Maggie and Makenna, who had four and three points, respectively. Callie Curtis also tallied three points on three goals.
Florida Southern started the game off with back-to-back goals from Lizzy Lynch and Madison Tare, in the first two minutes of action. Callie Curtis tied the game with a pair of goals herself for Lee where the game went tied 2-2 with 10 minutes to play.
Lynch would find Sammy Gorrasi for the Mocs 3-2 lead before Abby McFerren joined in on the scoring for a 4-2 lead. Makenna Luzier found the back of the net thanks to an assist from Noelle Harrington to cut it to 4-3, not long before Lynch scored her second of the game with an unassisted goal closing out the first quarter with Florida Southern leading 5-3.
The Flames’ Megan Trout scored to open the second quarter cutting it to 5-4 before the Mocs ripped off two straight to gain a three-goal advantage, 7-4, from Hailey Daleo and Madison Tare. Lynch would find Daleo at the 12:47 mark before Daleo returned the favor of setting up a teammate, finding Tare at the 11:21 mark.
The Luzier, Megan and Makenna, sisters went back-to-back to bring the Flames within one, 7-6, before Florida Southern rattled off four straight for a commanding 12-6 lead. In the run, Hailey Daleo scored three herself, Madison Tare scored her third of the game, and Ellie Griffin found the net from Jackie Stoller.
Two Lee goals closed the third quarter from Callie Curtis and Makenna Luzier, as Florida Southern stood ahead 12-8 with 15 minutes to play.
Jackie Stoller scored an unassisted goal to give the Mocs their largest lead of the game at the time, 13-8, before Lee scored at the 8:38 mark, 13-9 FSC. Stoller would tack on another goal with under two minutes to play before Casey Falduto scored under one minute to bring the game to its final of 15-9.
No. 3 Florida Southern returns to action Sunday at the University of Alabama in Huntsville with a 12 p.m. CT / 1 p.m. ET start at Charger Park.
