It’s amazing how much you can learn about a player’s compete-level from a potato-sack race.

Jacksonville arrives/returns to campus earlier than almost any other university in the country, so instead of diving headfirst into gameplay after getting to campus Aug. 8, coach John Galloway’s approach is about building a culture of togetherness off the field.

“We want to spend August becoming us vs. everybody. It’s kind of what we keep saying — it’s us vs. everybody — and I felt like all this had to be dedicated to creating us and that meant the beach, meals, going to soccer games or the Jags games and really creating situations where our guys can spend time away from the facility and away from the field. That is just as meaningful as time on the field,” Galloway said.
