Inside Lacrosse – The Power of Belief: American Heritage Has Goals Beyond Florida

American Heritage Boca-Del Ray is only 10 years old but has three state championships and is in the conversation with some of the best high school lacrosse programs in the country. If head coach John McClain has anything about it, that’s just the beginning. 

“We set lofty goals for ourselves,” said McClain. Those include an undefeated season capped off with another state title and a Top 10 ranking nationally. “Our goal is to be the best in the state and in order to do that we have to win the state title and maintain that ranking,” he said. 

McClain, a Long Island native who was instrumental to developing the girls’ game in the Boca Raton area, credits his daughter with his desire to grow the game. “My daughter got involved in girls’ lacrosse and truthfully, I didn’t know much about the women’s game but I fell in love with the game,” he said.   

He has taken an upstart program at American Heritage and turned it into a powerhouse, producing Division I players who are excelling at the next level. North Carolina’s Caitlyn Wurzberger, the No. 1 freshman in the Class of 2021, was in the first group of players at American Heritage Boca-Del Ray, helping to set the tone of greatness for the Stallions.
