No. 15 Women’s Lacrosse Downs Montevallo in Season-Opener
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – A prolific first quarter propelled the 15th-ranked Embry-Riddle women’s lacrosse team to a 20-4 season-opening win over Montevallo (0-1) on Saturday. The Eagles outscored the Falcons 11-0 in the first 15 minutes to improve to 1-0 on the young season.
Embry-Riddle’s performance featured balanced scoring as Kenley Zeruto led all players with three goals while six other players finished with two goals apiece. Alexa Zeruto and Eliana Enners contributed two assists each, while Sallie Squire and Enners finished with four and three ground balls, respectively.
The Eagles scored early and often in the first quarter. Squire got the first goal of the year for the Blue and Gold, scoring at the 13:53 mark. After that, Embry-Riddle goals came in quick succession with eight goals in the first seven minutes. Alexa Zeruto and Samantha Reich recorded two goals apiece to put the Eagles up 11-0 heading into the second.
It took almost 29 minutes for the Falcons to break through the Embry-Riddle defense as their first goal came on a free position shot with 1:28 left in the second period. The Eagles added three more to their tally and led 14-1 at the half.
The Falcons carried the momentum of their late goal in the second quarter into the third as they scored the first two goals of the frame in the first two minutes. The next two scores came from the Eagles’ Whittaker Smith as the visitors went on a 3-0 run to end the quarter with a 17-3 lead.
Three of the four goals in the final 15 minutes came from Eagle sticks. Three different players got into the scoring column for Embry-Riddle, including Emily Cimaglia’s goal that punctuated the Eagle scoring as the clock expired.
The Eagles are back on the road on Feb. 17, traveling to North Carolina to take on No. 11 Wingate.
