Comments from coaches about the success of the LaxNumbers formula — used for the first time this season to seed the CIAC boys and girls lacrosse tournaments — are a vast improvement from past gripes about the old record-based system, which often led to mismatches, unbalanced brackets  and late-round blowouts.

The results bear out the formula’s accuracy behind the high praise.

In the boys tournaments, the top four seeds reached the semifinals in all three divisions. In the girls tournaments, just two of the 12 semifinalists were outside the top four seeds, one being No. 5 and the other No. 7.

“If you look at all three divisions, it put the team with the higher strength of schedule at the top,” Cheshire boys coach Mike Devine said. “It works well. It rewards teams that go out and play a tough schedule to help improve their teams and it gives everybody an equal chance to win a state game.

“It gives a fair shake to everyone and creates a true tournament feel.”
