Lortz Named 2024 H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year Nominee

Lortz and Joshua King were selected as male and female nominees for the prestigious award

BIRNGIMHAM, Ala. – Senior Defender Emily Lortz was named a nominee for the 2024 H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year award, announced Friday afternoon by the Southeastern Conference office. Lortz was selected as the female nominee, and Joshua King from the cross country/track and field team was selected as the male nominee.

The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year award has been presented by the SEC since 1986 to the league’s top male and female scholar athletes.
Every April, each SEC institution nominates one male and female athlete to represent their school for the award, with the selection of the two winners being made by the Faculty Athletics Representation Selection Committee.

Lortz is an applied Physiology and Kinesiology major, who plans to work as a medical device sales representative, prior to starting her MBA. Below is a list of her academic, athletic and community work accomplishments:

  • Seven consecutive 4.0 GPA semesters, with an overall GPA of 3.99
  • President’s List member, Dean’s List member, SEC Honor Roll, AAC Honor Roll, & AAC All-Academic team for 2021-2024
  • Has appeared in 57 collegiate games, starting two of them. Has won three consecutive AAC Tournament championships, and has appeared in three NCAA Tournaments
  • 2022 NCAA Division I Individual Community Awareness Award Recipient, was the first Florida athlete to receive this
  • Over 140 hours in community service, from working with local Special Olympics, local churches, Gator Tracks, local Elementary schools, food banks, and disaster relief programs
  • Member of Gators Lead Global which did a week of community service in Costa Rica
  • Member of the UF Student-Athlete Advisory Committee

 The SEC will supply the male and female award winners with a $20,000 post-graduate scholarship, and the remaining 26 finalists will earn a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship.

Florida has had four H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar Athletes-of-the-Year, with three being females and one being a male. The last recipient Gator to receive this award was Savannah Faulconer of the swimming and diving team in 2021. 

The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year will be announced on April 30.
