PHILADELPHIA—Shayne Ryan started relatively late. He was in seventh grade in Gainesville, Fla., when he began playing lacrosse. He didn’t even like it. He just wanted to follow his older brother.
He was first a midfielder. That meant running. He didn’t want to run. He didn’t like to run. So, when the team goalie got in trouble for throwing trash out of a school bus window, the coach asked for a show of hands who wanted to play goalie.
Reluctantly, Ryan raised his hand. No running, right? How hard could being a lacrosse goalie be? Ryan found out within minutes of his first game when he took a shot off the shin.
