Rollins Women: Tars Tame Mountain Lions in 2022 Debut

WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 6, 2022) – The Tars dominated Young Harris on their way to a season opening, 16-7, victory over the Mountain Lions on the turf at Barker Family Stadium.  Rollins improves to 1-0 on the year, while Young Harris drops the final contest of their season opening road trip, and fall to 0-3.

Caroline Gastonguay led Rollins with five points, coming on four goals and one assist.  Charlotte Gastonguay also filled the net in her first collegiate game, scoring four goals for the Tars.  Ashley Goldstein paced the Tars with a pair of assists.  Claire Barber and Rachel Schlesinger both saw time in goal for Rollins, combining for six saves.

Ella Hancock registered two goals and two assists for Young Harris, while Kinsley Purser netted a hat trick for the Mountain Lions.  Rachel Robb starred in net for the visitors, making 18 saves.

The Tars controlled the game, firing 44 shots against Young Harris’ 16committing only 13 turnovers, while Young Harris doubled that number to 26, and picking up 31 groundballs against the Mountain Lions 17.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter

  • The Tars struck early with a pair of scores from Caroline Gastonguay and Liz Fahey.
  • Abigail Cawley tallied the games next two goals, including a skillful backhanded flick off a contested groundball.
  • Young Harris would crack the scoreboard with a free position shot in the final seconds

Second Quarter

  • The Gastonguays connected to open the second quarter scoring, with older sister Caroline feeding Charlotte on the crease.
  • The Tars followed that with back-to-back goals, growing the lead to 7-1.
  • A pair of Ella Hancock goals pulled the Mountain Lions back into the game.
  • The Tars score three more goals before the break, including an extra man tally from senior captain Taylor Kienle, growing the lead back to six at the half.

Third Quarter

  • Ashley Goldstein’s first collegiate goal started the second half scoring.
  • Each Gastonguay would find the back of the net before the period was over, and Rollins headed into the final frame with a 13-5 lead.

Fourth Quarter

  • Caroline Bailey netted her first goal in Blue and Gold to open the fourth quarter.
  • From there the teams traded goals, with Charlotte Gastonguay burying her fourth, and Paige Kienle finding the net for the first time in the game.
  • Young Harris could not cut the deficit below nine goals over the final 15 minutes as Rollins cruised home with the win. 

UP NEXT:
Rollins will take an extended break before heading on the road to take on Lenoir-Rhyne.  First draw against the Bears is set for Friday, February 25, at 4 p.m.
