Second-Ranked Tars Fall to Fifth-Ranked Bears in NCAA Tournament

Rollins ends the season with a 15-2 record

ORLANDO, Fla. (May 14, 2023) – The Rollins men’s lacrosse team, ranked second in the country and the top seed in the South Region of the NCAA II Tournament, fell to fifth-ranked and fifth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne in a national quarterfinal game on Sunday, 14-8. The game, which was played at Bishop Moore Catholic High School, was the first-ever NCAA Tournament game for the Tars, who finish the season at 15-2. The Bears improve to 16-3 with the win.

Grant Hansen led Rollins with four points on two goals and two assists, while Logan Myers added two goals and an assist and Justin White chipped in with two goals. Thomas Garvin was 11-for-20 in faceoffs with a team-leading seven ground balls, and Shahé Katchadurian (14-2) made seven saves on 21 shots faced.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter

  • The Tars started strong, with Hansen and White each finding the back of the net in the opening 3:45 to give Rollins a 2-0 lead.
  • After the Bears answered back with two goals, Myers and Jack Johnstone netted goals to push Rollins back in front, 4-2, after one quarter of play.

Second Quarter

  • Lenoir-Rhyne clamped down defensively in the second and the Bears got some momentum on offense, outscoring the Tars 5-0 in the period to go up 7-4 at the half.

Third Quarter

  • The Bears opened the scoring 43 seconds into the second half to make it 8-4, but White and Hansen scored 53 seconds apart to trim the deficit to 8-6 with 12:11 to go in the third.
  • After another Lenoir-Rhyne goal, Peter Buell, Jr. scored a man-up goal to make it 9-7 with 6:58 on the clock.
  • The Bears tacked on three more goals in the final 5:05 of the quarter, lifting their advantage to 12-7.

Fourth Quarter

  • Lenoir-Rhyne netted two goals in the first 2:51 of the fourth to pull away to a 14-7 lead.
  • Myers scored his second of the game with 3:08 to go, but the Tars couldn’t overcome the margin that had been built, as the Bears walked away with a 14-8 victory.
