Noteworthy events during game

On March 7, Jupiter hosted Plant in a rematch of last year’s state semifinal. Jupiter won the game on their way to winning their second championship in 4 seasons. Plant returns to Palm Beach County for the second time in a couple of weeks to face a defending champion (they played at St Andrews on February 25). This is a result of head coach Todd Frances putting together a schedule with top competition to get his team well prepared for a deep playoff run and shot at the state championship.

Jupiter got an early 3-0 lead behind goals from Silver and Meza. Plant would counter with goals from Stoltzfoos and Boyer before the end of the first quarter. Plant would tie the game with Kerr’s fast break goal. Max Silver scored his third goal before the half to give Jupiter the lead 4-3 going into the half. Jupiter and Plant would alternate goals in the third quarter, Turner Ashby scored his first unassisted goal, and Jupiter’s Todd Giol’s 2 assists to Bashaw and Sluszka would keep Jupiter in the lead at 6-4 going into the fourth quarter.

What had been a game with methodical offense and tough defense would take a turn towards a more aggressive offensive output rom both teams. Plant got a quick Willett goal assisted by Jack Boyer. Jupiter answered with Silver feeding the ball to Bashaw. Todd Giol scored a goal off a dodge from the alley which put Jupiter up 8-6. Then Plant would reel off three straight goals from Stoltzfoos and Ashby to take the lead for the first time at 9-8. Jupiter’s Sean Meyers would intercept a pass during a failed Plant clear and put it on an empty net to tie the score 9-9. Soltzfoos would rip a high shot off a dodge down the left alley to give Plant it’s final lead. Jupiter would tie the score behind Meyer’s assist to Bashaw, who scored the goal with 4 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

The first overtime period was a showcase of the goalies. Plant’s Busweiler would add to his 9 saves, and Jupiter’s Creps would hold off several shot attempts while Jupiter was playing man down. The game would be decided with Jackson Bashaw scoring his fourth goal of the game with less than a minute left in the second overtime.

This game was an instant classic which showcased the best of what Florida high school lacrosse has to offer.
