No. 5 Tars Sail Past Palm Beach Atlantic, Clinch at Least a Share of SSC Regular Season Title

Rollins is now 6-0 in SSC games this year

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (April 19, 2023) – The fifth-ranked Rollins men’s lacrosse team had little difficulty with Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday night, sailing to a 17-10 road victory. The win pushes the Tars to 13-1 overall, 7-0 in conference, while the Sailfish drop to 2-11, 0-6 in SSC play.

With just one conference game remaining, the Tars are now assured of at least a share of the conference regular season crown, and they will have a chance to win it outright by completing an undefeated conference season on Saturday at Florida Tech. Regardless of Saturday’s outcome, the Tars are now assured of the top seed in next week’s conference tournament.

Jack Johnstone led the way with a career-high eight points on six goals and two assists to go along with three ground balls and a caused turnover. Mikey Berkman tallied a goal, five assists, two ground balls, and a caused turnover, while Grant Hansen had two goals and three assist. Justin White chipped in with three goals, an assist, and a ground ball, and Logan Myers added three goals and a ground ball. Shahé Katchadurian (12-1) earned the win in goal, stopping nine of the 16 shots he faced in 47:18, while Maxwell Beuck made four saves on seven shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter

  • PBA opened the scoring at the 12:44 mark, but White quickly answered by 47 seconds later to tie the game.
  • After another Sailfish goal, Johnstone netted his first of the night, with Hansen scoring just five seconds later to give Rollins a 3-2 lead.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic drew even at the 2:30 mark, but Johnstone and Myers each tallied late goals to give the Tars a 5-3 advantage after one quarter.

Second Quarter

  • Rollins outscoring PBA 6-1 in the second quarter, thanks to two goals each from Johnstone and Myers along with markers from Hansen and White, increasing the margin to 11-4 at the half.

Third Quarter

  • Berkman scored first in the third quarter, with Palm Beach Atlantic following that with three straight goals to cut the lead to 12-7
  • Johnstone answered with two goals in the span of 40 seconds and White added his third of the game with 31 seconds to go, re-building the eight-goal cushion at 15-7.

Fourth Quarter

  • Peter Carden and Peter Buell, Jr. each posted goals in the fourth quarter as the Tars cruised to a 17-10 victory.

UP NEXT:
The Tars will travel to Melbourne on Saturday, Feb. 22 to take on Florida Tech in the final game of the regular season, which is set for an 11 a.m. start. A win on Saturday would secure an undefeated mark in conference play this year, and with it, the regular season conference title.

Sailfish Fall To No. 5 Rollins

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men’s lacrosse team fell to No. 5 Rollins 17-10 at the Rinker Athletic Campus. Dylan Insolia scored a career-high four goals and PBA freshman Bryce Downs earned his second-career hat trick. 

Insolia produced in the first quarter with two goals and one assist. Henry Sloyan distributed an assist when he connected with Insolia on the perimeter. Insolia found the back of the net and gave the ‘Fish a 1-0 lead. PBA went up 2-1 when Insolia found Downs near the net with 9:19 in the first quarter. At the 2:30 mark, Neil Calkin assisted Insolia and tied the game at 3-3. Calkin passed for his sixth assist of the year. The Tars answered with a 6-0 run into the second quarter.

The lone goal for the ‘Fish in the second quarter came from Calkin. The Massachusetts native scored his 13th goal of the season. Calkin ran from behind the net and scored a one-handed goal. Calkin finished the game with one goal and one assist. 

In the third quarter, PBA went on a 3-0 run. Downs scored his second goal of the game followed by goals from the Southard brothers. PBA freshman Keegan Southard used a spin move, eluded Tars defenders, and launched a shot to the back of the net for his seventh goal of the season. Caleb Southard called his own number and scored his 13th goal of the year with 5:09 left in the third quarter. 

PBA scored three goals in the final quarter. Insolia notched his second-career hat trick when he ripped an outside shot for his third of the game. Caleb Southard assisted Downs near the crease. Downs finished in the one timer and completed his hat trick. Southard leads the ‘Fish in assists this season with 14 and Downs has scored eight goals this season. Insolia tacked on one more for PBA’s 10th goal. 

Defensively, Dylan HuntTy Wright, and Cole Gehman caused two turnovers each. Noah McKoeun took 13/27 faceoffs and picked up a team-high six ground balls. Ben Lightsey started in net and made 11 saves. 

The Tars took eight more shots than PBA, picked up 13 more ground balls, and committed four fewer turnovers than the Sailfish. 

PBA concludes the regular season versus No. 16 Florida Southern on Saturday, Apr. 22 at the Rinker Athletic Campus.
