No. 13 Panthers Come Back from Early Deficit to Beat Sailfish on the Road

FIRST QUARTER:

  • PBA controlled the opening 10 minutes of the contest as the Sailfish jumped out to a 7-1 lead. Bennett Duffy provided Tech’s lone goal during the Sailfish run off an assist from Griffin Bowie, which tied the game at 1-1 with 12:13 to go.
  • Goals by Justin Williams and Austin Engeler ended PBA’s run and cut the Panthers’ deficit to 7-3 with 2:47 left in the first.

SECOND QUARTER:

  • Tech scored the only two goals of the second quarter to decrease the margin to 7-5 at halftime. 
  • Patrick Stewart scored his first of the day off an assist from Sam Sidari to make the score 7-4 with 12:50 remaining. 
  • Jakob Terpak beat his defender to the middle of the field and scored to make it a two-goal deficit with 5:10 left before halftime. 

THIRD QUARTER: 

  • PBA scored first after halftime to increase its lead to 8-5 at the 12:35 mark of the third. 
  • The Stewart Brothers struck back as Pat scored off an assist from his younger brother, Collin, to bring the margin to 8-6 with 10:37 to go. 
  • Zach Rozgonyi made it a one-goal game off an assist from Williams with 8:03 left. 
  • Sailfish scored two more time in the third to push their advantage to 10-7 with 1:34 remaining in the quarter. 

FOURTH QUARTER:

  • Panthers opened the fourth on a six-goal run to take the game over. The run began after a Sailfish player was penalized with an illegal stick before the quarter started that awarded Tech with a three-minute man advantage. 
  • Collin Stewart tallied his first of the game during the man-up off a feed from Williams to cut the margin to 10-8 with 14:20 left
  • One minute later, Rozgonyi picked up the rebound off his own shot and scored one-on-one against the PBA keeper to draw the Panthers to within one, 10-9, with 13:20 remaining. 
  • Rozgonyi kept it going with back-to-back goals to tie the game with 9:37 to go, off an assist from Terpak, and then hand the Panthers their first lead of the day, 11-10, on a feed from C. Stewart with 5:44 left. 
  • Terpak scored his second of the game 36 seconds later off an assist from Sam Sidari to extend the Panthers’ lead to 12-10. 
  • Patrick Stewart then completed his hat trick off a feed from Williams with 4:25 to go to make it a 13-10 game. 
  • PBA eventually broke through for its first goal of the fourth quarter, but it was too-little, too-late as the Panthers held on for the 13-11 victory. 

NOTABLE PANTHERS:

  • Zach Rozgonyi scored 4 goals on 14 shots to go along with 5 ground balls and 2 caused turnovers.
  • Justin Williams finished with 4 points, on a goal and 3 assists, 3 ground balls, and 2 caused turnovers. 
  • Patrick Stewart tallied his first career hat trick on just 3 shots to go along with 2 caused turnovers and 1 ground ball.
  • Jakob Terpak added 2 goals and 1 assist.
  • Collin Stewart recorded a goal and 2 assists in addition to 3 ground balls. 
  • Sam Balch collected 5 caused turnovers and 6 ground balls.
  • Austin Engeler scored a goal and picked up 4 ground balls. 
  • John Hulsman made 12 saves while facing 37 shots to improve his season record to 8-4. 

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

  • Florida Tech finished with an edge in shots (57-37), shots on goal (26-23) and caused turnovers (18-8). 
  • Panthers were 2-3 on man-up tries while limiting PBA to 0-3. 
  • Sailfish controlled the faceoff battle, winning 18-27 attempts. 
  • PBA collected one more ground ball than Tech (38-37).
  • Tech was successful on 16-17 clears while PBA went 12-17.
  • Sailfish turned the ball of 26 times compared to 13 for the Panthers. 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Florida Tech improves to 3-0 all-time versus PBA.

Sailfish Fall Late To #13 Florida Tech 13-11

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla- The Palm Beach Atlantic men’s lacrosse team dropped an SSC game 13-11 to No. 13 Florida Tech on Saturday. For the ‘Fish it was their fourth consecutive game against an opponent ranked in the national top-20. Ben Justice scored four goals. Hunter Hopman scored three, and Caleb Southard had two. 

Defensively, PBA’s Aaron Miechiels caused three turnovers along with three ground balls. Ben Lightsey made his tenth start in net for the ‘Fish and recorded 13 saves. Noah McKoeun went 66% at the faceoff x with 12 ground balls.

A  Hopman hat-trick headlined the first quarter as the Sailfish built a 7-3 lead. At 13:55, Austin Evans connected with Justice on the crease. Justice turned and fired a shot that gave PBA a 1-0 advantage. The Panthers answered back with an equalizer before the Sailfish went on a 6-0 run. Hopman’s first goal of the game put PBA up 2-1. At 11:04 in the first Joshua Turner notched his fourth goal of the season with a laser. Almost 30 seconds later Hopman weaved his way through Panther defenders and ripped a shot for a PBA 4-1 lead. At 6:54 in the first quarter Justice dodged and ripped a lefty bounce shot that extended the ‘Fish lead to 5-1. 

Southard’s highlight-reel goal put the Sailfish up 6-1. Southard, swarmed by Panther defenders in front of the goal took a behind-the-back shot that found net. Southard is fourth on the team in goals with 12 this season. Hopman completed his first quarter hat-trick with 5:01 in the first quarter. The Panthers closed out the opening quarter with a 2-0 run. 

The Sailfish were held scoreless in the second quarter. The Panthers pumped in two goals as the score at halftime was 7-5. 

Henry Sloyan opened up the second half with a deep righty rocket to build PBA’s lead to 8-5. Sloyan leads the Sailfish in goals with 19 this season. The Panthers scored two quick goals to cut the deficit to 8-7. Sloyan distributed in the third quarter with two assists. At 7:35 in the third, Sloyan found Justice for Justice’s third goal of the game. With 1:34 left in the third, Sloyan connected with Southard for Southard’s second of the game. PBA led 10-7 through three quarters. 

A three-minute unreleasable penalty put the Sailfish in a bind as Florida Tech capitalized. The Panthers closed the game out on a 6-1 run. Florida Tech took their first lead of the game with 5:44 left. PBA’s lone goal of the fourth quarter came with 1:57 left. Justice launched a shot top corner to bring his season total to 14.

PBA fell to 4-6 on the season. Next, the Sailfish travel to Boca Raton for a SSC matchup against Lynn on Wednesday, Apr. 13.
