SSC Men Semifinal Two: FIT Tames Lynn 13-6 – Both Press Releases

(Men’s Lacrosse) – Carson Clough recorded a season-high seven points to guide Florida Tech to a convincing 13-6 victory over No. 3 seed Lynn in the semifinals of the Sunshine State Conference Men’s Lacrosse Tournament on  Friday. Clough finished with four goals and three assists against the Fighting Knights. Logan Sweeney had a strong outing from the midfield, finishing with three goals on five shots, while Nick Wynne tallied a goal and two assists. Dylan Riley and Matt Weinstein contributed one goal and an assist, apiece. Nate Menninger led the Panthers defensively with three caused turnovers to go along with two ground balls. Jake Pierson led the team with five ground balls and Daniel Flock made 13 saves in goal in the victory. Lance Pavlina controlled his attempts at the faceoff dot, going 9-of-13 with four ground balls. Lynn opened the scoring with a goal by Tully Wise. The Panthers answered with three consecutive tallies by Clough, Sweeney and Austen Zugelter to put FIT ahead 3-1 with 3:58 left in the first quarter. Florida Tech increased its lead to 8-4 following second quarter goals by Robert Filipow, Wynne and Clough. However, a goal by LU’s Mikey Urso with 2:46 left in the period made it an 8-5 game heading into halftime. Weinstein scored the only goal of the third quarter, off an assist from Riley, and expanded the Panthers’ advantage to 9-5. Johnny Gavin’s goal to start the fourth period scoring cut the Fighting Knights’ deficit to three with12:02 remaining. However, the Panthers scored the final four goals of the contest to shut the door on Lynn’s chances and propel themselves into the SSC Championships Game for the second time in program history. Florida Tech will look to pull the upset when it squares off with top-seeded Tampa in the conference final on Sunday, Apr. 30, at 2 p.m. ET in Tampa, Florida. The Blue and White reached the SSC Tournament for the second time in the program’s four-year existence. STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Lynn netted the first goal of the game on a Tully Wise unassisted strike, but that would be the last time the Fighting Knights held a lead for the remainder of the game.
  • Johnny Gavin was the only Lynn player to find the back of the net multiple times, scoring twice on four shots. He also picked up four ground balls.
  • Nick Howard notched three points behind a goal and two assists.
  • Mikey Urso and Austin Jerhoff rounded out Lynn’s goal scorers with freshman Colin O’Hara recording his second assist of the season on Urso’s strike.
  • Dryden Brous won nine of his 15 faceoff attempts and picked up a game-high six ground balls.
  • Collin McClelland wrapped up his freshman campaign in net with his sixth double-digit save performance, finishing with 10 stops.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Lynn has made appearances in the SSC Semifinals in 2015 and 2017. This year’s third-seed was the team’s highest seeding. 
  • The Fighting Knights came out on top of a three-way coin flip tiebreaker at the end of the regular season to claim the No. 3 seed.
  • Jerhoff finishes his career as the program’s all-time leader in points (141), goals (95), assists (46), shots (244), and shots on goal (176).
  • Shaun McDonald and Brian Kiel finish as the program’s top two most tenured players with 53 and 52 appearances, respectively. McDonald’s 41 career caused turnovers is the most-ever by a Fighting Knight.
  • Urso set the school’s single-season assist record this year with 20 while Brous’ 67.6 faceoff winning percentage is a new program mark. Brous was three ground balls shy of the single-season record.
