No. 14 Women’s Lacrosse Upsets No. 9 Florida Southern, 15-7

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 14th-ranked Embry-Riddle women’s lacrosse team notched a big victory in Sunshine State Conference play on Wednesday, upending ninth-ranked Florida Southern, 15-7, at the ERAU Lacrosse Stadium. Friday marked the Eagles’ fifth defeat of a ranked team this season and is the program’s first against an NCAA II top-10 foe and the first win against Florida Southern in the short series history.

The Eagles held a Florida Southern side that averages 17.38 goals and 31.62 shots per game to just seven goals on 17 shots, only 13 of which were on target.

The ERAU offense came out firing on all cylinders tallying 15 goals and five assists for a total of 20 points, while winning 12 draw controls, picking 19 ground balls and causing 16 turnovers.

Sallie Squire scored six goals to lead all players and recorded her sixth game of the season with five goals or more. Elizabeth Ninesling had a solid all-around performance with two goals on three shots to go with eight ground balls, eight caused turnovers and five draw controls. Tori Lammes added three goals, and Murphy McDonough and Callison Foreman added two goals apiece.

The Blue and Gold dominated the offense to start the game. After FSC’s Madison Tare got the first goal of the game the Eagles scored five unanswered, including a pair by Lammes to go up 5-1 at the end of the first.

The second quarter proved to be a defensive battle with both sides combining for just three goals during those 15 minutes. Once again, the Lady Mocs struck first but Squire and McDonough added two goals to the Eagle tally to give ERAU a 7-2 lead at the half.

The Eagles continued to pressure the FSC defense to start the second half and goals by Ninesling and Squire pushed the ERAU lead to seven (9-2). The Lady Mocs managed to find the net twice late in the third, but Squire and Lammes each recorded an unassisted finish to reclaim the seven-goal (11-4) cushion.

Foreman scored one of her two goals 27 seconds into the fourth quarter and that started a four-goal run that put the Eagles up 15-4. The Lady Mocs mounted a late rally, but while they were able to cut the deficit, their efforts were not enough to catch the Eagles.

The Eagles play their final regular season road game at 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday against Tampa.

#9 Mocs Fall to #14 Eagles on the Road

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The No. 9 Florida Southern College Moccasins dropped their third game of the season to the No. 14 Embry-Riddle Eagles, 15-7 on Friday afternoon.

Patricia Werker started the game for the Mocs (10-3, 2-2 SSC), taking the loss as her team was unable to overcome a four-goal first-quarter deficit on the road. The Eagles (12-2, 3-2 SSC) made the most of their home-field advantage to defeat the highly-ranked Moccasins, outshooting the visitors 22-13 in shots on goal.

It was a dominant effort throughout, as the Eagles won every quarter despite a tenacious effort from Florida Southern. Ellie Griffin won a team-high six draw controls and Abby Hammond earned a pair of caused turnovers and ground balls. Madison TareLizzy Lynch, and Hailey Daleo each scored twice to provide some offense, but the Embry-Riddle defense was stout, holding the Mocs to a new season-low with just seven goals.

Tare scored the game’s first goal in the opening minute, giving her team a lead that would last just 42 seconds, as the Eagles’ Sallie Squire scored her first of six goals on the day to tie the game at one. It wouldn’t be tied again after that, as the Eagles rattled off four more goals in the quarter to take a commanding lead that they wouldn’t relinquish.

Daleo scored to open the second quarter and cut the deficit, but again the home team responded with two goals to take a 7-2 lead into the half.

The Eagles built up a seven-goal lead that the Mocs momentarily cut into again with consecutive goals from Daleo and Lynch, but again, Embry-Riddle rebounded with a big scoring run, tallying six straight to take a 15-4 lead in the fourth quarter. Tare, Lynch, and Griffin scored the final three goals of the game to minimize the gap, but the Eagles hung on to win a big conference game, 15-7.

The Moccasins dropped their second conference game of the season and will have the chance to rebound this Wednesday against Florida Tech, at home.

The team now has just three conference games remaining on the current schedule: April 20th vs Florida Tech, April 23rd at Palm Beach Atlantic, and April 24th, at Lynn University, a game that was rescheduled after a postponement due to weather earlier this season.

The Sunshine State Conference playoff race continues to heat up, with the tournament set to begin on April 28th. The top four teams in the conference will qualify for the championship field.
