PBA’s Upset Bid Fails at No. 15 Tampa

by Brad Seitz, Assistant Director of Athletic Communications

TAMPA, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic women’s lacrosse team headed to take on the University of Tampa Spartans this afternoon. PBA’s bid to pull the big upset over the No. 15 ranked Spartans fell away as Tampa went up early and went on to win 22-5.

After surrounding the opening goal of the contest, the Sailfish were able to tie the game 1-1 at the 10:21 mark. Kelly Lyons was able to find the back of the net on a free-position attempt as she decided to fire from deep instead of running the ball in towards goal. From that point on though, the Spartans scored the next five goals to close out the opening quarter. PBA was outshot 14-3 in the opening 15 minutes of play and goalie Courtney Rausch was able to make four saves to limit the deficit.

Tampa kept the scoring momentum in the second quarter as they scored the opening three to take a 9-1 lead before PBA scored their second goal through Katie Karlson who scored her second goal of the season. Kiki Cinotti would add a goal one minute before the halftime break as the ‘Fish trailed 3-12 at the half.

Chelsea Smith scored her third goal of the season to open the third quarter for the Sailfish, but it was the only shot they were able to muster in the quarter. They were outshot 39-13 in the game and lost 23-of-30 draw controls which allowed the Spartan offensive onslaught to continue. Tampa scored six in every quarter except the third in which the ‘Fish held them to four. Rausch finished the game with 11 saves which ties her season-high. Addyson Johnson scored the lone goal for the Sailfish in the fourth quarter as the Spartans were within control throughout.

The Sailfish will return home for their next game on Wednesday, April 13 when they host Embry-Riddle. The Eagles are 11-1 on the season and ranked No. 13 in the country.
