18th-ranked Fighting Knights win thriller over 5th-ranked Tars

Boca Raton, Florida – After achieving a national ranking for the first time in program history earlier this week, the Fighting Knights proved they were for real with a 12-10 victory over national No. 5 Rollins. The Tars came into the game undefeated, but they never once trailed as Lynn was able to keep them at arm’s length for the final three-quarters of the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Diane Dohler got the scoring started, finding the back of the net on a free position shot just over 1:30 into the game.
  • Rollins’ Liz Fahey would tie the game up three minutes later.
  • The back and forth nature of the game would continue as Mallory Jarka put Lynn back on top 2-1 with a goal with 9:14 left in the period. It was followed by a Rollins goal that knotted the game at two.
  • The Fighting Knights then scored back-to-back goals. First, Lauren Dickson beat the keeper, then Kristyn Johnson scored a man-up goal to give Lynn a two-goal lead.
  • Rollins would get on the board next, and the Fighting Knights would take a 4-3 lead into the second quarter.
  • Lynn came out on fire to start the second quarter, scoring four consecutive goals to take an 8-3 lead.
  • It all got started when Danielle Farinas took a Dohler pass and found the back of the net.
  • Bayley Tracy scored less than a minute later off a pass from Sydney Hill, then Farinas scored her second goal of the game.
  • The run was capped by a Hill to Dickson connection that gave Lynn the five-goal advantage.
  • Rollins would end the run and cut the lead to four before Jarka scored her second goal of the game to put Lynn back up by five.
  • The Tars would score the next two goals of the half to cut the deficit to 9-6 heading into the break.
  • In the third quarter, the Tars quickly cut the lead to one, as they showed they were not going to go down quietly.
  • Lynn needed to find a spark offensively, and find one they did in Hill. She managed to beat the Tars defense twice in just over 1:00 to put Lynn back on top by three.
  • Rollins would add one more goal in the period to cut the lead to 11-9.
  • In the fourth quarter, Carly McNeil found the back of the net early to put Lynn back up by three.
  • Rollins would score with 6:50 remaining to make things interesting, but they weren’t able to score again, giving Lynn their biggest win in program history.
  • Ciara Moorman recorded 11 saves, each of which was huge in keeping Lynn on top throughout the game.
  • Johnson recorded seven draw controls and Jarka had four.
  • Dickson led the way with three ground balls, while Johnson, Moorman and Hill all had two.

UP NEXT:

The Fighting Knights will look to keep the momentum going when they travel to Florida Tech on Saturday, Apr. 16 for a 3 p.m. clash with the 20th-ranked Panthers.

Tars Fall in Boca Raton

Rollins dropped their first contest of the 2022 campaign, as they fell on the road against No. 25 Lynn, 12-10

BOCA RATON, Fla. (April 13, 2022) – Rollins dropped their first contest of the 2022 campaign, as they fell on the road against No. 25 Lynn, 12-10.  The No. 6 Tars fall to 12-1 overall, and 3-1 in Sunshine State Conference play.  The Fighting Knights improve to 11-2 overall and 2-1 in SSC action.

Liz Fahey led the Tars with a game high four goals.  Caroline Gastonguay netted a hat trick, while Abigail Cawley dished out a trio of assists.  Abigail DeGroat filled the stat sheet with seven draw controls, a pair of caused turnovers, and scored a goal of her own.  Rachel Schlesinger made eight saves, playing the full 60 minutes in net for the Tars.

Four Fighting Knights each scored twice, highlighted by Sydney Hill, who registered a team high four points on two goal and two assists for Lynn.  The sophomore also caused three turnovers, picked up two groundballs, and collect two draw controls.  Ciara Moorman starred in net for Lynn, making 11 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter

  • The Fighting Knights got on the board early, but Liz Fahey would equalize at the 8:11 mark to pull the teams even.
  • Lynn would respond a minute later to regain their lead, but again the Tars would answer when Ashley Goldstein found a wide open Abigail DeGroat on the doorstep for the Rollins’ second score, as the teams battled back and forth early.
  • Lynn would find the back of the net twice, as the Fighting Knights grabbed a 4-2 lead, but the Tars were able to slice the deficit down to one before the end of quarter when Abigail Cawley found a cutting Caroline Gastonguay for the goal.

Second Quarter

  • Lynn would score on their first two possessions, and register the first four goals of the second quarter, to balloon their lead to 8-3.
  • Fahey finally broke the streak at the 5:43 mark. Caroline Gastonguay was able to force a turnover on a Lynn clear and found Fahey, who converted in the unsettled situation.
  • Lynn regained their five goal lead with the next score, but Fahey earned her hat trick, off an assist from Abigail Cawley, to keep the Tars within striking distance.
  • The Tars then sliced the Lynn lead to three just 5 seconds before the break, as Abigail Calwey fed Caroline Gastonguay for her second goal of the day.

Third Quarter

  • The Tars tallied first in the second half, with Claire Reist finding Caroline Gastonguay on a fast break to pull Rollins within two, at 9-7.
  • Elaina Joyner brought the Tars within one, picking up a rebound and depositing the ball in the net over the head of the Lynn goalkeeper.
  • The Fighting Knights responded with back-to-back goals, to reclaim their three goal advantage.
  • Taylor Kienle would score a fast break goal with less than 30 second to play in the third to send the teams into the final 15 minutes with the score at 11-9.

Fourth Quarter

  • Lynn would tally early in the fourth to take a 12-9 lead, but Fahey would pull Rollins back to within a pair with her fourth score, off an assist from Abigail Cawley.
  • The Tars could not pull any closer down the stretch, despite having opportunities to pull within one.

UP NEXT:
Rollins will return home for a tangle with No. 16 Tampa.  The Tars and Spartans will faceoff on Saturday, April 16, with first draw set for 1 p.m.
