No.4 Spartans Burn Through No.8 Rollins

TAMPA, FL. – The No.4 University of Tampa women’s lacrosse team burn through No.8 Rollins on a hot Saturday afternoon on their home turf.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

First Quarter: The game opened with Tampa taking the first shot but it was saved by Rollins, but a failed clear attempt from Rollins resulted in Tampa gaining the ball back. Tampa knocked a goal in then Rollins responded with one of their own. The first few goals were matched by each team before Tampa took the lead and never let go. The goals for the Spartans were scored as follows:

6:47 – Sarah Hinkle, unassisted

5:16 – Sarah Hinkle, unassisted

0:03 – Lizzie Pierpont, assisted by Gia Colombo

Second Quarter: The second quarter came out with Tampa showing their power never allowing Rollins near the goal. They went on a 4-0 run to extend their lead further. Riley McGettigan added a pair of assists to the stat sheet to assist the team in taking a substantial lead at halftime The Spartan goals headed into halftime were scored as follows:

9:12 – Emma McLoughlin, assisted by Riley McGettigan

8:52 – Lizzie Pierpont, assisted by Riley McGettigan

7:57 – Olivia Mott, assisted by Emma McLoughlin

5:35 – Gia Colombo, unassisted

Score: 9-3 (Tampa)

Third Quarter: The third quarter opened with Tampa scoring again with a goal by Sarah Hinkle. Rollins sunk two goals in this quarter putting them at five points on the afternoon. This didn’t bother Tampa as they continued to punch the ball into the back of the net every opportunity they got. Hinkle and Lizzie Pierpont contributed big this quarter adding to their long list of contributions to the team. The Spartans goals were scored as follows:

Fourth Quarter: The last quarter started with Rollins getting on the board first as they entered with a burst of last minute energy. Tampa took the game at their own pace scoring two more goals this quarter by Cece Colombo and McGettigan. Rollins scored another goal in the closing seconds of the game, but it wasn’t enough to stop Tampa’s dominant performance on a hot Saturday afternoon. The Spartan goals for the fourth quarter were scored as follows:

9:09 – Riley McGettigan, unassisted

Rollins Falls at Tampa in Top-Ten Battle

TAMPA, Fla. (April 15, 2023) – The eighth-ranked Rollins women’s lacrosse team came up short in a battle of top ten teams on Saturday, falling to No. 4 Tampa by a score of 17-7.

Charlotte Gastonguay scored two goals while Caroline Gastonguay tallied a goal, a ground ball, and two caused turnovers. Claire Barber (5-2) took the loss in goal, making eight saves on 25 shots faced.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter

  • After Tampa scored the opening goal, Charlotte Gastonguay and Jorie Alf scored 44 seconds apart to put the Tars in front, 2-1.
  • The Spartans responded with three straight goals before Abigail Cawley scored, giving Tampa a 4-3 lead.
  • UT found the net in the closing seconds of the quarter, taking a 5-3 lead after 15 minutes.

Second Quarter

  • The Spartans kept the Tars off the scoreboard in the second quarter while netting four goals, giving the home team a 9-3 lead at the half.

Third Quarter

  • Tampa scored twice to open the third before Charlotte Gastonguay put home her second goal, cutting the deficit to 11-4.
  • After another Spartan goal, Caroline Bailey found the net to make it 12-5.
  • UT tacked on three more goals to go up 15-5 heading to the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter

  • Caroline Gastongauay scored the first goal of the final quarter and Abigail DeGroat tallied the final goal, with Tampa scoring twice in between, accounting for the 17-7 final score.
