#5 Mocs Handle Panthers on the Road

MELBOURNE, Fla. – No. 5 Florida Southern women’s lacrosse traveled to Melbourne to play its last regular season road game and earned a 20-11 win over the Florida Tech Panthers at Rick Stottler Field.

The Moccasins (14-2, 5-1 SSC) saw 13 players tally a goal in the win led by Jackie Stoller with three on the night. Giana Murphy tied Stoller with the team lead in points with three on two goals and one assist. Olivia ManghisiMadison TareHailey Daleo, and Maria Reeves joined Murphy in the two-goal club.

In goal, Sydney O’Neill earned the win with four saves in 30 minutes of action before Rylie Rittberg returned to action, making five saves in the final 30 minutes. O’Neill moves to 3-1 in goal on the year.

Florida Tech (9-7, 1-5 SSC) scored first but the Mocs rattled off three straight from Gina VerroneGiana Murphy, and Jackie Stoller to claim a 3-1 lead with 10 minutes to play in the opening frame.

Florida Southern finished the first period scoring six more goals to the Panthers’ two for a 9-3 lead.

Kenzie Streby found Elise Alders on the backside for the first goal of the second period before Hailey Daleo and Sammy Gorrasi teamed up to make the game 11-3 in favor of the Mocs.

The Panthers would net back-to-back goals to make it 11-5. Kaylee Stoky would score a goal with a minute to play as the Mocs headed into the break up 12-5.

Maria Reeves would score a pair of goals to open the third to give the Mocs a nine-goal advantage, 14-5. Florida Southern saw a trio of goals sandwiched between two Panther goals for a 17-7 game, putting the running clock into action with 3:51 to play in the third.

Despite Florida Tech outscoring Florida Southern in the final stanza, the Mocs would go on for a 20-11 win. Daleo, Hannah Hale, and Danielle Dunn all scored the Mocs’ final goals.

No. 5 Florida Southern returns home on April 22, to host Palm Beach Atlantic in the final regular season game of the year at 1:00 p.m. at Berend Field before turning its attention to the Sunshine State Conference tournament.

Angelo’s First Career Hat Trick Not Enough as No.5 Florida Southern Takes Down Tech

MELBOURNE, FLA. – The Florida Tech Panthers hosted its final regular season home game on Wednesday night against the No. 5 Florida Southern Moccasins (Mocs). The Panthers struggled to keep up with one of the Top five teams in the country but showed signs of grit throughout the game.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

FIRST QUARTER:

  • Millie Hurt scored first for the Panthers off an assist by Gillian Craig, putting Tech up 1-0 1:18 into the game.
  • The Mocs then pulled ahead scoring nine unanswered goals all in the first.
  • Emma Angelo broke Tech’s scoreless streak with 1:26 to go in the quarter.
  • Rachel Johnson gave the Panthers three goals to put the Panthers back within six after a free position goal with one second left in the first.

SECOND QUARTER:

  • The Mocs scored the first two goals in the second quarter with the first of their two goals being a woman-up.
  • Kayla Minton soon scored with an assist from Rachel Johnson with 3:58 remaining in the second.
  • Emma Angelo recorded her second goal of the night off an assist from Caroline Finn with 1:33 remaining before halftime.
  • The Mocs put up one more point on the board before the half making it a 12-5 Florida Southern lead at halftime.

THIRD QUARTER:

  • Just like the second quarter, Southern scored the first two goals of the quarter, before Rachel Johnson could answer back with a Panther goal as tech trailed 14-6.
  • The Mocs would go on to score three unanswered goals before Caroline Finn would find the back of the net with an assist from Phoebe Hurt for the final goal from either side before the fourth quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER:

  • Jennifer Boyle and Finn scored the opening goals of the fourth quarter with the Panthers still trailing 17-9 before the Mocs answered back with a goal of their own.
  • Sophia Scichilone would score her first of the game with 5:31 remaining as Southern would score to lead the Panthers 19-10.
  • Emma Angelo would go on the score the Panther’s only hat trick with 2:14 to go.
  • The Mocs had the final goal in the game with 1:26 to go as Florida Southern would take home the 20-11 win over the Crimson and Gray.

NOTABLE PANTHERS:

  • Angelo, Finn, and Johnson all recorded three points.
  • Angelo scored three goals with Finn and Johnson recording two goals and one assist.
  • Karly Liebendorfer led the Panthers with a career-high four ground balls.
  • Brooke Albert recorded a career-high and team-leading three caused turnovers while also recording two ground balls.
  • M. Hurt recorded the most draw-control wins of any Panther with four.
  • Minton was 2-3 on her free position shots.
  • Emily Harris recorded a season-best nine saves against the No. 5 team in the country.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

  • Southern outshot Florida Tech 37 to 24 as the Mocs recorded 31 shots on goal to Tech’s 20.
  • Between Harris and Kellen Lucchesi, Tech made 11 saves compared to Southern nine.
  • The Panthers turned the ball over 19 times with the Mocs recording 15 turnovers.
  • Florida Southern was 14-15 on clear attempts while the Panthers were 12-19.
  • The Panthers recorded 27 more ground balls than the Mocs who picked up 20.
  • Florida Southern outdrew Tech 20-13 in draw-control wins.
  • The Mocs took eight free position shots while the Panther only took four.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Florida Tech is now 0-15 all-time against Florida Southern.
