Caroline Gastonguay scored five goals in the win

SAINT LEO, Fla. (April 19, 2023) – The eighth-ranked Rollins women’s lacrosse team got back to its winning ways on Wednesday, knocking off Saint Leo on the road, 18-12. The win puts the Tars at 14-2 overall, 4-2 in conference, while the Lions fall to 10-6, 2-4 in SSC play.

Caroline Gastonguay tallied five goals, four ground balls, three caused turnovers, all of which were game-highs, and added one assist, while Abigail Cawley racked up three goals and four assists. Delanie AbereCharlotte Gastonguay, and Lauren Noonan all chipped in with two goals apiece. Courtney Martin led the Tars with six draw controls and Claire Barber (6-2) made 14 saves on 26 shots to get the win in goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter

  • After Saint Leo opened the scoring, Rollins responded with five straight goals, including two from Caroline Gastonguay.
  • The Lions added a late goal to make it a 5-2 game after one quarter.

Second Quarter

  • Cawley scored first in the second quarter, with Jorie Alf following up to make it a 7-3 contest.
  • Saint Leo scored two in the period, sandwiched around Cawley’s third goal of the game, giving the Tars an 8-5 advantage at the half.

Third Quarter

  • The Lions scored 33 seconds into the third to cut the deficit to two (8-6), but three straight Tar goals put some distance between the two sides at 11-6.
  • Saint Leo scored twice in 42 seconds in the final minutes of the quarter, but the Gastonguay sisters each found the net in the closing 2:40 to keep the lead at five (13-8) going to the final period.

Fourth Quarter

  • SLU got on the board just over a minute into the quarter before Aberie and Alf scored consecutive goals to make it 15-9.
  • Each sided added three more goals in the final 10 minutes, including the final two from Caroline Gastonguay, as the Tars easily coasted to an 18-12 win.

The Tars will return home to host Florida Tech on Saturday, April 22 at 1 p.m. in the regular season finale.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

FIRST QUARTER:

  • Rollins opened the game by scoring five straight goals.
  • Sophia Scichilone scored Tech’s first goal of the game with 4:15 to go in the first.
  • The Tars scored once more in the first to lead 6-1 at the end of the quarter.

SECOND QUARTER:

  • Two goals from the Tars in the second increased their lead by seven making it an 8-1 game.
  • Goals from Kayla Minton followed by Carly Niro, assisted by Gillian Craig, brought the Panther’s deficit to within five goals trailing 8-3.
  • The Tars would score two more goals in the second and take a 10-3 lead over the Panthers heading into halftime.

THIRD QUARTER:

  • Rollins opened the third scoring four straight goals.
  • They recorded six unanswered goals before Jennifer Boyle scored off Emma Angelo’s assist with 56 seconds remaining in the quarter before time expired.

FOURTH QUARTER:

  • Rachel Johnson opened the final quarter of the game but still trailed Rollins 14-5.
  • The Tars would later go on to score with 10:44 to go increasing their lead to 15-5.
  • Karly Liebendorfer tallied a goal for the Panthers with 3:57 reaming in the fourth off an assist from Caroline Finn.
  • Rollins put up one more goal as time expired, taking the win over Florida Tech 16-6.

NOTABLE PANTHERS:

  • Minton, Johnson, Niro, Boyle, Liebendorfer, and Scichilone all scored goals for the Panthers.
  • Craig, Angelo, and Finn led the Panthers with an assist each.
  • Niro recorded a team-high three ground balls.
  • Kailee O’Brien and Niro both led the team with three caused turnovers each.
  • Angelo won four draw controls, the most of any Panther against the Tars.
  • Emily Harris made 10 saves against Rollins.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • Rollins outshot Tech 34-16 while recording 26 shots on goal to the Panther’s 12 shots on goal.
  • Rollins won 17 ground balls while the Panthers recorded a combined 15.
  • The Panthers caused nine turnovers while the Tars caused eight.
  • Rollins won 15 draw controls with the Panthers winning just 10.
  • Florida Tech turned the ball over 20 times with Rollins recording 16 turnovers.
