Stetson Lacrosse Opens the Season With a 20-7 win at Presbyterian

CLINTON, SC – Stetson women’s lacrosse opened their season in the Palmetto State against the Presbyterian Blue Hose claiming a 20-7 victory. The Hatters controlled much of game through their 22 draw controls and holding the Blue Hose to just 13 shots on goal.

“It was a total team effort today,” said Head Coach Christy Leach. “We got sparks from all over the field-the draw, defensively and our attack. We put together a solid 60 minutes of lacrosse and I’m proud of our team staying locked in the entire game. 

Presbyterian would get on the board first at the 13:48 mark. The Hatters responded by netting the next three goals.  Katie Kornacki recorded the first goal of the season with an assist by Jordyn HumphreyLexi Bird scored the next goal, her first collegiate goal, and Kaitlin Pani put in the third to give Stetson a 3-1 lead. The Blue Hose stopped the run with a goal of their own before Stetson went on another three-goal run. Humphrey netting 2 goals and Lexi Bird getting her first from a free position shot to extend the Hatters lead 6-2 at the end of the first quarter, the defense had a strong showing recording 6 takeaways. 

The Blue Hose opened the scoring the second quarter with 2 straight before Pani netted her second goal of the game at the 3:15 mark to keep the Hatters on top 7-4. Molly Kearney scored her first of the season shortly after to put Stetson on top 8-4. The teams traded goals with Humphrey completing the hat trick as the Hatters led 9-5 at the half. The Stetson defense once again causing problems for their opponents in the second quarter limiting Presbyterian to just three shots.

Stetson extended their lead in the third quarter with six goals, while the defense held Presbyterian scoreless as Sydney Heimann made 3 saves. Katie Kornacki started the scoring for the Hatters at the 14:21 mark. Sam King got in on the action, scoring shortly after with her first goal of the game. Humphrey netted her fourth, and then freshmen Maya Sellinger scored her first goal as a Hatter. Pani then went on to score her third and fourth of the game to put the Hatters up 15-5 heading into the fourth.

The Blue Hose finally were able to get past the Hatter defense on a free position attempt. Humphrey continued to find the back of the net as she netted her fifth goal of the game. She was followed by Georgia Goering’s goal as the Hatters continued to pour on the offense leading 17-6. Presbyterian broke up the Hatters run with a goal of their own, then Humphrey recorded her sixth of the game followed by Goering’s second and third to make the final 20-7 in favor of the Hatters.

Stetson will continue their play in South Carolina as they take on Wofford in Spartanburg Friday February 16th at 3:00PM.
