Sunday Morning Musings . . .

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in , .

We’re done with the First Round entirely, and there’s a few things to comment on from yesterday.

The first thing I want to mention is how much better it is to watch a game on the Brevard Sports Network, as they broadcast the Holy Trinity-Montverde Boys Round One 1A Region 2 game yesterday. Having been in the booth last year for this exact game (albeit the 2nd round last year) I can say that the combination of Jackson Robb (don’t forget the name, he’s the next edition of Boog Sciambi and Bob Wischusen for those with long memories of Hank Goldberg’s WQAM 560 show), Caleb Brown and Alan Zlotorzynski has become a terrific trio, and unlike the NFHS, they actually show all the play . . . Holy Trinity revenged last year’s playoff loss and now face the tough task of traveling to Benjamin, which broadcasts on YouTube.

The quicker the FHSAA wakes up and yanks the Final Four away from NFHS, the better the entire Florida lacrosse scene will get. When it comes to NFHS and the Final Four, the ONLY word that comes to mind is BORING.

The JU Men dropped a game to Air Force yesterday, effectively killing any hope of an at-large bid to the tourney, and will face needing to win the ASun for the bid.

American Heritage-Plantation’s Daniel Haimes has recently been taking the faceoffs for Air Force.

The ASun tourney will be a tough ride for the Dolphins. Utah has clinched the #1 seed and yesterday’s win by the Falcons means JU will likely have to play the quarterfinal round if Air Force handles Robert Morris next week. And that 3/6 matchup might well be against RMU. If JU wins against Bellarmine and AF loses to RMU, the Dolphins end #2 and get the bye.

In MCLA action yesterday, the Florida Gators, the #1 team in the last two MCLA D1 polls, lost their semifinal SELC Conference playoff game to Georgia Tech.

While checking to see if at-large bids exist, I came across the MCLA tourney record book, and found Lake Mary assistant Danny Hogan still is tied for most assists in an MCLA tournament game . . . how that compares to Jake Bernhardt still holding the record for most shot attempts in an FHSAA Final Four is up for debate, but at the risk of Jake smacking me around, I’m going with Danny’s . . .

Supporting that claim was a spectator in attendance who mentioned his would be record setting 7th being waived off for a crease violation . . .

For those missing the tweet about it, the Mercer-Queens Men’s game saw Florida kids combining for 11 goals and 9 assists, with SA’s Carl Klepper with 4G/2A and Winter Park’s Parker Junod 3G/2A.

It was a fruitful day all around for Florida kids, as Fleming Island’s Eric Dobson scored a hat trick and St Thomas’ Ava Yovino added a hat trick of her own in her first Army-Navy game.

Benjamin’s Hanna Hilcoff scored twice for Clemson, making her the first 50 goal scorer in Clemson history; a history that is in it’s first year but likely to be a big-time program shortly, given their Top 25 play in their inaugural year.

Georgetown’s Womens team has struggled this year, but Ransom’s Erin Bakes and AH-Delray’s Kylie Hazen had big seasons for them, with Kylie at 35G/21A and Erin with 38G/5A

Over the summer, I’ll try to go back and create a similar D1 record book for the Women as I did for the Men.

One great thing about at-large bids is that there are so many schools that finally have their first wins in a bracket, as well as just making a bracket.

Off the top of my head, first time winners this year are:

Pensacola Catholic Boys, SJP II Boys, St Petersburg Catholic Girls, Cypress Creek Girls, Viera Boys, Lake Howell Boys

Let me know if I am missing some or I’m wrong on the above.
