Tampa Women Secure Berth To SSC Tournament With Win on Senior Night Over Saint Leo 13-6 – Both Press Releases

photo via UT web site   Tampa Press Release   TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa women’s lacrosse clinches spot in Sunshine State Conference Championship Tournament with win over Saint Leo.

  • Saint Leo started off strong with four goals in a row.
  • Amanda Voges was the first Spartan goal, converting a free position attempt.
  • The Lions answered back with a goal, now leading 5-1.
  • With 1:21 left in the half, Voges strikes again.
  • Caroline Forester had the last goal of the half, assisted by Voges. Going into the second half trailing Saint Leo 5-3.
  2nd Half
  • Abby Coccagna had the first goal of the second half to bring the score within one goal.
  • Saint Leo extends their lead to two goals with a free position goal.
  • With 22:24 left in the half, Voges had her third goal of the game and tying the game.
  • Rachel Crawford had three goals in a row to give Tampa the lead of 9-6.
  • Voges struck again at 8:36.
  • Forester converted a free position attempt for her second goal of the game.
  • Crawford had her fourth goal in a man-up situation.
  • With one second left on the clock, Senior Kelly Austin secures Tampa’s victory for the 13th Spartan goal of the game.

  • Voges led all Spartans in points with four goals and one assist.
  • Crawford had four goals, tallied one ground ball and one caused turnover.
  • Claire Swanson led the team in draw controls with three, marking two ground balls and one caused turnover.
  • Rom  and Coccagna each tallied one goal.

Please search for Tampa Spartans Front Row.   =====   Saint Leo Press Release   TAMPA, Fla. – The Saint Leo women’s lacrosse team fell to Tampa, 13-6, on Saturday evening in the final game of the 2017 season. The Lions and the Spartans were battling for the final spot in the Sunshine State Conference tournament, with the winner earning the No. 4 seed and the chance to play No. 1 seed, Florida Southern. Saint Leo jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but the Spartans closed the game on a 12-1 run to take the game and the final spot in the SSC tourney. The Basics Saint Leo fell to Tampa, 13-6 Location: Naimoli Field | Tampa, Fla. Records: Saint Leo 6-11, 0-4 SSC | Tampa 6-10, 1-3 1H | Saint Leo jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Kaylah Walstad buried an FPS in the back of the net just 20 seconds into the game. Three minutes later, Leslie Ferguson tacked on another for the green and gold. Freshman Delaney Chrisco then found Kelsey Burns for the Lions third goal within the first nine minutes of action. Burns added her second goal of the game as a pass from Caroline Fraser found Burns cutting in front of the cage. The Spartans would score their first goal of the game with 10:10 left to play. The Lions grabbed another goal as Abbie Ross earned an FPS, but chose to pass instead. Her pass found Sabrina Sanacore who found the back of the net. With 1:33 remaining in the first half, the Spartans scored a free position shot. Off the following draw, the Spartans earned possession and score their third goal just 14 seconds later. | Saint Leo 5-3 2H | The Spartans got on the board first in the second half after a failed clear attempt by the Lions. They brought the game to 5-4 with 24:10 left to play. A free position goal by Katherine Larson brought the Lions lead back out to two goals. However, just a few seconds later, the Spartans added an FPS of their own. The Spartans then evened the game at six with 21:11 left to play. With 20:11, Tampa took the lead with their fourth goal of the half. Tampa then added another FPS goal with 14:52 to play. With 13:20 left, the Spartans’ Rachel Crawford scored her third straight goal and the fifth straight for Tampa. The Spartans added their 10th goal with 8:38 left to play. The home team added another FOS goal with 6:27 left in the game. With one minute remaining, Crawford added another for the Spartans. Tampa was granted an FPS with one second on the clock, and they capitalized. | UT 13-6 Points to note
  • Kelsey Burns finished with two goals, bringing her career total to 111.
  • Caroline Fraser finished with 22 assists this season for 45 for her career.
