Coach Mo Asif’s Blog: Starting Up Northside Christian School! – Part 4

Author’s Note:  Readers will remember that for the first two years of Doug Shanahan’s coaching reign at start-up St. Brendan’s we asked Doug to occasionally blog about the experience of developing a new high school program from scratch.  The series was well received and when FLN had a chance to replicate the series at another school we were happy to find Mo Asif, the new coach of the new NCS program in St. Petersburg, willing to do so!  Thanks to Coach Asif for taking this on and we hope the readers will find this a fun read and one that we all can learn from!     4/3/2018 In the past few weeks we have seen much growth in the fundamentals of the game from the team. The passing is more accurate, and coming off the stick with some velocity. The cuts and dodges are getting much better as the players are realizing that it is vital to be moving around at all times to be successful in this game! We have been focusing the last two weeks to just spacing and slide drills in order to focus on this aspect of the game. Unfortunately, we were bitten by the injury bug last two weeks and have been making adjustments to accommodate those losses that are out for the rest of the season. We lost our leading face-off middie to a broken finger against Admiral Farragut Academy and a week later we lost our starting middie wingman to a broken forearm. It has been challenging to fill those holes but the team has adjusted very well by stepping up to the challenge. We are now planning for a 4 game home spread and trying to play each game better than the last. The players have really created a nice bond with each other, and I can tell that the synergy on the team is finally starting to come together as they now have a better feel for each other and how they play the game. I have been really impressed by the upperclassmen and how they have embraced the leadership role on the team. It seems like we are finally coming together as a team that has been playing lacrosse for a while, and as a coach no other feeling is greater! Thanks, Coach Mo Asif
