WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (February 20, 2022) – The Webber International University men’s lacrosse team opened conference play on Sunday afternoon as it matched up against No. 4 University of the Cumberlands. It was a tight game, but the Patriots were able to hold off the Warriors to earn the 9-5 victory.

It was both the season and conference-opener for Cumberlands (1-0 overall, 1-0 AAC) as they outshot the Warriors (3-2, 0-1) 48-25. Webber won the majority of face-offs with 10 compared to the seven of the Patriots.

The Warriors were held scoreless in the first quarter as Cumberlands would score three times to take an early 3-0 lead. Alexander Kew would pick up the first goal of the game for Webber by way of a Chase Jackson assist. The Patriots would score yet-again less than a minute later to restore their three-goal lead. With four minutes remaining in the half, Kew would turn provider, this time assisting a goal from Houston Finlayson to cut the deficit to two at the halftime break.

Cumberlands would score two goals over the first seven minutes of the second quarter to increase its lead to 7-2. Later in the quarter, the Warriors would score back-to-back goals roughly 30 seconds apart. First, a man-up goal from Finlayson followed by a solo goal from Cade McCaron would bring Webber within three at 7-4. However, the Patriots would do enough to hold off the Warriors scoring twice in the fourth quarter. The last score for the Warriors would come with less than two minutes remaining in the game after another man-up goal from Finlayson, earning him his first hat-trick of the season.

The Warriors were led by Finlayson who finished with three goals followed by Jackson who tallied three assists on the day. Kew had one goal and one assist for a total of two points. Hunter Scott led the team with six ground balls and also went 9-14 in faceoffs.
