Jacksonville Leaves No Doubt in Victory Over Detroit Mercy

DETROIT  — In midweek Atlantic Sun (ASUN) action, the Jacksonville University men’s lacrosse team defeated Detroit Mercy 21-9, led by Jackson Intrieri and Nicky Brown, who combined for 12 of the 21 goals as both added in one assist in a showcase of offensive efficiency. It was the Dolphins’ fifth conference win this season, scoring over 20 goals for the second time in the 2024 campaign.

The Numbers
It was Intrieri and Brown from the beginning, as the pair played a vital part in the win. Intrieri scored a team-high seven goals, tying himself for the second most goals in a game in program history, finishing one goal shy of the record. Brown scored five in the game, continuing his run of high-level offensive production.

Jacob Greiner added to the win as a facilitator, assisting on five goals and scoring twice, looking to secure a third straight ASUN Player of the Week award. Charlie DiGennaro picked up three ground balls, helping the Dolphins hold their ninth opponent this season to single-digit scoring.

Tucker Garrity was critical on both sides for the Dolphins, picking up three ground balls and scoring once, helping to produce a stout defensive performance in the second half. Nathan Kapp led the team in ground balls, finishing with nine while going 17-26 on faceoffs. Ryan Della Rocco finished the game with eight saves and eight goals allowed.

How It Happened
A quick start helped JU roll to victory as the Dolphins scored seven times in the first quarter, as Brown and Intrieri combined for five of the first seven Jacksonville goals in the first quarter. Intrieri kicked off the scoring at the 13:04 mark, with Anthony Caputo making it a 2-0 game just 34 seconds later assisted by Nathan Kapp‘s continued dominance as the faceoff specialist, earning key possessions for the JU attack.

The Titans would get one back, cutting the deficit to just one, but Intrieri would score with 6:40 left in the first, followed by Brown’s first goal of the game 15 seconds later. After another Detroit Mercy goal, Garrity would score with one minute left and Brown would notch his second of the game with just one second remaining in the quarter off an assist from Greiner in transition.

The Titans would earn a run of their own, scoring three straight before a six-goal response from the Dolphins, which would give the JU sideline some momentum in the late stages of the first half into the beginning of the third quarter. In the third quarter, the defense began to find more stops, allowing just one Detroit Mercy goal in the third to put the game in hand.

A 16-7 lead entering the fourth became a 12-goal lead at the finish as Cameron Smith and Sam Chase would add the final touches on the midweek road victory.

Head Coach John Galloway
“Today was a very important game for our program, as we had never won in Detroit before. Our guys handled it like a business trip from start to finish. Jackson Intrieri was special today, along with his attack mates. They have taken a huge step in second half of season, and are controlling the pace of play offensively. Nathan continues to be a steady force, and Ripp (Drew Rippeon) is ready in the wings for him to give him support. After a shaky start, the defense followed suit and settled down versus a potent UDM midfield.

We don’t have time to celebrate this one, as we have a quick turnaround to protect our home turf on Saturday. I’m eager to get back to work with our team and chase more growth!”

Next Up
Jacksonville returns home for a Saturday (April 12) matchup against Lindenwood at noon. The Dolphins will look to win their sixth ASUN game of the season, setting up a pivotal conference game against Air Force the following week.
