Saint Andrew’s Tito Thompson worked hard for this ground ball as you will see below…
To paraphrase a line long associated with the author Mark Twain . . . rumors of the demise of the Saint Andrew’s lacrosse program have definitely been greatly exaggerated. Trailing 10-6 on the road to Jupiter with 5:40 left in the third quarter the Scots reached down and pulled a reprise of their championship history and outscored the Warriors 7-2 the rest of the way, including scoring the tying and go-ahead goals within 18 seconds of each other in the last two minutes to give themselves probably their most important win of the last one and a a half seasons.  Playing with an intensity and passion that had been lagging in past losses the offense found gaps in a Jupiter defense that had been pretty stingy all season and made some key defensive stops down the stretch.jup sa thomson between legs jup sa thomson gb Brian Fox and Nick Ignaza were able to step up and compensate for the loss of Addison Lutes and a quiet game from Peter Dykas and Davis Diamond produced all of his 2G/5A in the second half to overcome a strong Zach Crotty/Jesse Foertmeyer/Michael Dean effort earlier in the game.  The Scots outshot Jupiter 43-33 and hit the net with 30 of the 43, as well as limiting themselves to 13 turnovers to overcome a 17-save performance by Viper Scheele.  SA ‘s ascent and improvement in the past three games will now be geared towards their next match-up with Thursday’s key district game with Boca Raton while Jupiter, fresh off a win over IMG the game before, will host St. Edwards on Tuesday looking to regain momentum going into the last half of a season that will feature a long stretch of tough road games.
Nick Diamond put SA up 1-0 less than a minute into the game as he cut from the left wing towards the middle and while falling got off a one-handed shot into the upper left corner that took Scheele a little by surprise.  Jupiter responded with a three-goal run in less than a minute to go up 3-1.  At 7:38 Dean took a feed from behind the right side of the net from Crotty on the right wing and he stepped into a right hand shot that beat SA starting goalie Andrew Busel high to the short side.  Just 7 seconds later Foertmeyer face dodged from the left wing towards the middle and bounced one in on the left side and at 6:40 Alex Derrico took advantage of a shot off the crossbar that rebounded right to him in the middle and he quickly deposited it into the top of the cage.  At 5:12 Tito Thompson took off down the left alley and was able to bounce one that kicked high up into the left corner to cut the deficit to one but with only :52 on the clock Foertmeyer made it 4-2 as he worked a give and go with Sean Denes on the left side and he found the low half of the net to end the period. Jupiter continued the run early in the second, scoring twice in 16 seconds to jump out 6-2.  Crotty fired a left wing rocket at 9:58 into the top right corner after taking Denes’ top middle feed and Foertmeyer took Crotty’s left behind feed on the left wing and bounced one home.  Sam Baker got one back for SA at 8:26 on a fast break as Dykas found him from the right wing in the middle and Baker quick-sticked it on the right side, hip high for 6-3 but just 30 seconds later Dean finished off a Jupiter fast break set up by a Scheele outlet pass, taking Foertmeyer’s left wing pass on the right crease and easily finishing for 7-3.  In the second period SA replaced Busel with Harris Feldman and Feldman started to make key saves.  SA was able to finish the second strong, with two key goals that cut the lead to 7-5 at half and partly shift momentum.  At 1:51 Fox scored after a failed double team attempt with Scheele involved as he curled from behind the right side of the net and found the open cage and with :48 seconds left Mark Heatzig took advantage of a fast break as he picked up his own rebound and was able to finish in the top part of the net. SA cut the lead to 7-6 in the third at 9:53 as Iznaga took Davis Diamond’s on the right side from the left wing and he bounced one in.  Jupiter responded with a three-goal run to make the game 10-6 and seemingly giving Jupiter the impetus to win the game.  At 8:56 Crotty curled around the left side of the net and hit the low short side from the wing.  Jupiter then took advantage of a couple of penalties to score twice on EMO.  At 6:55 Dean scored on the right crease after Foertmeyer worked the left wing towads GLE and found Davis Yates all alone after the slide and at 5:40 Crotty worked the right alley and scored with the right hand from close in. But SA made some key plays as they were able to start to work the middle of the offense to get back into it.  At 3:44 Fox took D. Diamond’s pass in the middle from the top, turned right and went high with the right hand and just 37 seconds later Fox was able to step down with the left hand from up top and went right corner high and it was back to a 2-goal game.  Yates finished off the period with 1:04 left as he scooped up a loose ball in front and shot to the right top corner to make it 11-8 after 3. The fourth quarter turned out to be pretty much SA’s.  Outshooting Jupiter 13-5 they turned the game around possession-wise and were rewarded with the effort.  At 10:29 Diamond scored unassisted as he worked the right wing, spun to the middle and used the left hand to hit the low left corner.  Then at 9:36 the lead was shrunk to one as Diamond was found by Iznaga in the middle from behind the net and Diamond made no mistake, hitting the top left corner for 11-10.  At 6:15 Dean took a left crease feed from Crotty to stretch it back to a 2-goal lead but after that it was all SA.  At 5:24 SA regained momentum with as Iznaga again found room in the middle of the defense and Diamond found him from up top, with Iznaga hitting the top right corner, setting the stage for the dramatic final two minutes. At 1:58 Iznaga and Diamond teamed up again to tie the game.  Diamond beat the defense down the right wing and found Iznaga all alone on the left crease and only 18 seconds later Fox scored the game winner on another middle of the defense look as he took Iznaga’s feed from the left side and SA had raised the ghosts of the past one more time. Jupiter was able to get a few more possessions but their best look was a Peter Cox shot from straight away that Feldman was able to parry away and one late rush did not result in a shot and SA was able to come away with the hard-earned victory. April is coming up and we just might see this one again, this time for a shot at the Final Four . . .   Team Statistics   Faceoffs: SA 20 – Jupiter 9 Shots:  SA 43 – Jupiter 33 Shots on Goal:  SA 30 – Jupiter 21 Turnovers:  Jupiter 17 – SA 13 Penalties:  SA 4 – Jupiter 2   Individual Statistics   SA Brian Fox  4G Nick Ignaza  3G/2A Davis Diamond  2G/5A Nick Diamond, Tito Thompson, Sam Baker and Mark Heatzig  1G each Peter Dykas  1A   Jupiter Zach Crotty  3G/3A Jesse Foertmeyer  3G/2A Michael Dean  3G Davis Yates  2G Alex Derrico  1G Sean Denes  2A   Viper Scheele had 17 saves for Jupiter and Harris Feldman and Andrew Busel combined for 9 saves for SA   Thanks to Coach Seaman and Coach Loftus for talking to me before and after the game.
