#3 Saint Andrew’s Grinds Out 10-6 Win Over #4 Oxbridge

You knew SA had this one circled on the calendar.
As did a lot of local fans.
And the Lax Sports Network.
All because of last April. And an amazing reversal of last year’s regular season meeting.
You knew it was going to be good.
And it was.
It really was a simple game to analyze afterwards. One team finished their opportunities and one didn’t.
The goalie play reversed last night too. Last playoff Christian Tomei made 18 saves on 25 shots on goal. Last night it was 6 for 16. SA’s tandem of Andrew Buzel and Nick Ferraro went 9 for 15.
A poor clearing performance in the first half by Oxbridge.
Sprinkle three posts in the 3rd quarter when OA looked like they might make a run, only to be followed by a three-goal run late in that period by SA to basically put it out of reach.
Last playoff an undersized attackman made a big difference in the win, last night another undersized attackman shot back. Good thing his running partner gave him a big target.
Statistically the game wasn’t all that far apart . . . but a lot of OA’s first half turnovers were clearing related and a few were really sloppy killers.
SA’s offense took better care of the ball.
Add it up and there’s your difference.
An interesting way to look at this game is to also look at how familiar these two teams are now with each other.
This was the FIFTH time these two have played in about 2 years and 2 weeks.
The playoff win was the first time it wasn’t a blow out.
Last night really wasn’t either.
Let’s hope it stays that way for years to come.
The fans of both sides would be happy.
As would me.
SA opened the scoring up on a bit of a fluke play at 10:01 as Tomei lost control of a rebound in front and Carl Klepper (4 goals) managed to find the loose ball 5 yards out and his right hand bounce shot kicked high to the left side for 1-0. Then at 6:10, off a delayed penalty, Matt Adams found Owen Bezick on the right wing from behind the net and Bezick’s step down found the low right corner for 2-0 and that’s how the quarter ended.
At 9:28 Adams and Bezick combined again as Adams made his way to GLE from behind the right side and found Bezick cutting down the middle and Bezick finished to the right side for 3-0. At 7:26 Nick Iznaga stretched the lead to 4 as he faced dodged the left wing and hid right hand found the top right corner. Oxbridge finally got on the board as Bobby Kilian worked down the right wing, finding the far left side with the right hand at 3:41. But Iznaga got that one back only 38 seconds later as he worked up the wing from the low left side and his right hand shot hit the top short side to make it 5-1 at the half.
Oxbridge pushed it more on offense in the third and B. Kilian caused a turnover near midfield and took off down the right wing, firing to the low left corner at 8:51 to make it 5-2. OA then controlled possession for a number of minutes but was not able to capitalize, as they hit the aforementioned three posts and at 2:07 SA made them pay as Adams won the loose ball behind the net and found Klepper in front for the easy shot for 6-2. Michael Lizzio made it 7-2 as he split 2 defenders near mid field and was able to run in for the uncontested 10-yard bounce shot. And with 16 seconds left SA threw another dagger as Adams and Klepper again teamed up as Adams found Klepper all alone on the left crease from right GLE to make it 8-2 after three.
Oxbridge pushed hard early in the fourth and the Kilian brothers combined to make it 8-3 at 10:28 as Bobby’s low right wing feed found brother Jack cutting down the middle for the top side shot. Then Connor Davies cut it to 8-4 at 6:30 as he worked from left GLE to the middle, finding the low left with the right hand. At 5:29 SA regained one as Xavier Mccormack dodged from the top right wing to the middle and his left hand found the low left corner. Braedon Rupp got that back at 5:14, winning the loose ball off the faceoff and going down the right side before firing to the low left corner, but that was pretty much it, as the teams traded last minute goals, as Klepper and Bezick teamed up and Austin Murphy answered off a faceoff win to make it a 10-6 final. Unfortunately Bobby Kilian was tossed from the game late and OA will need to possibly face not having him available for the next game.
Oxbridge is back in action on Friday, hosting district foe Park Vista, beginning a run of district games, while SA also plays Friday, at home against district rival Boca Raton.
