#9 FIT Panthers Tame UT Spartans 19-9 – Both Press Releases

MELBOURNE, Fla. (Women’s Lacrosse) –Caroline Dunleavy and Sara Grenier recorded six points apiece and No. 9 Florida Tech (11-2, 2-1 SSC) earned a 19-13 victory over Sunshine State Conference foe Tampa (5-10, 0-3 SSC) in Saturday’s Senior Night game.
The Panthers set two program records in the game against the Spartans. The win is the Crimson and Gray’s 11th of the campaign, besting the old mark of 10 set during the 2016 season. Also, the 19 goals scored against Tampa gives FIT 225 for the year, surpassing the previous record of 218 goals established during the team’s inaugural season, in 2015.
Dunleavy finished with four goals and two assists and Grenier led all players with five goals to go along with one assist. Leah Dunn tallied a career best four points on three goals and an assist, while Mary Gormley collected her 100th career point on a three assist-one goal night.
Allie Modica notched three goals, three ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls in her final regular season home game. Sam Schiano scooped up a game-high six ground balls to go along with two goals and an assist. Lauren Tybor tied a game-high with five draw controls in addition to three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Stephanie Stuart improved her season mark to 11-2 while making four saves in the win.
FIT ended the contest with more shots, 39-21, including a 24-6 edge in the first half. The Panthers also corralled more ground balls, 33-22, while both teams collected 17 draw controls in the game.
The Crimson and Gray scored the first eight goals of the game, three off the crosse of Dunleavy, to grab a solid lead with five minutes remaining in the first half. Amanda Voges finally put Tampa on the scoreboard on a free position goal with 4:37 left on the clock.
Consecutive goals by Schiano and Grenier pushed FIT’s lead to 10-1, before Maggie Gladden scored off a pass from Amanda Rom to make it an eight point game, again. However, Dunleavy beat her defender and the clock with her fourth goal of the game to increase the Panthers’ advantage to 11-2 just before halftime.
Modica made it a 10-goal game on an unassisted effort with 26:18 remaining in the second half. The Spartans scored three straight, including two on free position attempts, to cut their deficit to 12-5, but Grenier answered with consecutive tallies of her own to bring the margin to 14-5. Another Tampa free position goal brought the score to 14-6.
Gormley fed Modica for consecutive goals to make it a 10-goal game, again, with 11:53 left. However, the Spartans would grab the momentum, scoring seven of the next eight goals, four by Caroline Forrester, to decrease the deficit to 17-13 with just over two minutes remaining. An unassisted score by Dunn stopped the bleeding and gave FIT a five-goal advantage.
Then, with only 28 seconds remaining, Grenier capped the Panthers’ second league victory of the season when she found a cutting Gormley for the junior’s first goal of the game and 100th career point.
Next up, Florida Tech travels to Winter Park, Florida for its regular season finale against SSC rival No. 5 Rollins on Thursday, Apr. 20, at 7 p.m. ET. The matchup between the Panthers and Tars has major conference implications as the winner will lock up the No. 2 seed in the SSC Tournament.
