Boca Goes to 2-0 With 11-3 Win Over West Boca

Boca Raton followed up Monday’s big win over Ponte Vedra with an 11-3 win over their District 23 rival West Boca Raton. The win was earned by a couple of goal scoring streaks and Coach Holly was able to work his bench into the game for lengthy stretches. Boca closed out the 1st quarter leading 4-0 although there was some sloppy play along the way. At halftime the score was stretched out to 7-1 and an early streak of 3 goals early in the third left the game in no doubt and the teams traded a few goals afterwards to make the finish 11-3.
West Boca, a team I saw in person last season, showed a good deal more organization in their overall game than I witnessed last year in their first season playing under new Head Coach Dustin Markwardt. WB was able to clear effectively and was able to get a lot of good looks but Boca’s goalie Matt Digney made a number of close-in saves in the first half to take the starch out of the attack. Over time, Boca’s physical long poles were able to shut down the chances. Based on what I saw last night Boca is very strong on the back end, big and physical and with solid stick skills so they will prove difficult to score on all season.
One area where Boca will have to improve is in the face-off circle as they were whistled for a number of procedure violations. It almost cost them the game against PV and the extra possessions will be important against the heart of their schedule. The offense was effective when they protected the ball and ran through their progressions but sometimes showed some issues when they tried to do too much individually. Ryan Clinton led the team with 7 points (5G/2A) as he was the main beneficiary of good ball movement. The rest of the scoring was balanced out.
Boca returns to action at home Tuesday night against district rival Spanish River and West Boca travels back to central Boca to play Pope John Paul on Saturday night.
