Boca Raton 14-8 Over Columbus Catholic in Battle of Programs Looking to Climb Back

But the last few seasons have been tough for both and now the possible rebuilding of both are in full swing and both teams came into the game at 4-0.  Boca might be a little ahead of schedule record wise while CC has a nice road win at AH-Boca. Either way, an interesting test for both teams to see how far they’ve come. And right now it is Boca that is hanging onto the #We’reback hash tag a little tighter (can I use a ‘ in a hash tag Wells?). Boca broke open a one-goal game after three with a 6-1 run in the fourth quarter to put the game away.  Statistically the key to the game was Boca’s offensive efficiency versus CC’s . . . at least when either team was not turning it over.  Each side gave it up 24 times, which is kind of how rebuilding programs do it.  Faceoffs were 15 apiece.     But the big difference was simply Boca converted 14 goals on 17 shots on goal off of 22 shot attempts.  CC was 34 for 19 for 8 goals. Boca’s Spencer Dobkin made 11 saves and CC’s tandem of Leo Guerra and Matt Corazon (Sorry, have to mention this one Jim . . . how do you get a kid named War and a kid named Heart to be your goalies?  That is one for the literary world . . . kids, wear those names proudly as the season goes on!) combined for only 3. And the reason for this efficiency was simply the effect of two kids playing together since youth ball and being able to translate that chemistry at the right time.  Boca’s Zack Frey and Michael Clinton combined for 8 goals and 6 assists, leading the way.  Logan Kigar and Christian Eisenmann combined for 3G/3A in the supporting roles and it was enough to cinch the deal. It will be fun watching both teams grow throughout the season.  In CC’s backyard what looked like a two-team FHSAA now looks more wide open after last week’s results.  Will CC make it 3?  For Boca it still is a very young squad and still resides in a tough district but the future is looking better.     Columbus jumped out early, scoring twice in the first four minutes.  Cole Quigley opened it up at 10:24 unassisted off a right alley dodge as his right hand found the low left corner and that was followed up at 8:11 as Alberto Diaz worked right GLE and found Rafael Huguet on the crease for the one-timer to make it 2-0.  Back and forth each team went until Eisenmann took advantage of a turnover, going down the middle and fed Mason Weidersum on the left wing for the step down bounce shot that kicked up in the left corner at 2:17 to make it 2-1.  A little over a minute later Boca took advantage of the Man Up as Frey was able to scoop up a loose ball at left GLE and avoided the onrushing goalie to hit the open cage for 2-2.  But only seconds later Ross Jimenez was able to get off a long shot that Dobkin wasn’t ready for and the period ended with CC up 3-2. Robert Perry stretched the lead to 4-2 at 10:24 of the second as he drove in from behind the left side, towards the low left wing and his right hand went high into the net.  At 8:16 Boca cut it back to 4-3 as Clinton and Frey teamed up, with Frey founding Clinton on the crease from behind the net for the goal.  62 seconds later it was 5-3 as CC took advantage of their own Man Up, as Andres Aguirre was fed on the left crease by Quigley from the top right wing and Aguirre snuck it in. The rest of the quarter was all Boca as they rallied for 3 goals to take the 6-5 lead at halftime.  First Frey and Clinton replicated their previous goal as Clinton again finished on the crease at 6:01.  Just 21 seconds later is was Frey unassisted as he cut in from left wing to the middle and his right hand bullet found the top left corner.  Boca finished the run with 40 seconds left as Clinton picked off a clearing pass behind the net and found Frey alone on the left crease for the open side put in.     Boca stretched it to an 8-5 lead with the first two goals of the 3rd.  At 9:26 the duo teamed up again, on EMO, as Frey again worked behind the net, finding Clinton on the low left wing for the top right corner shot and at 5:55 Frey found Kigar on the top left wing from low left and Kigar ripped one into the top right corner.  63 seconds later CC got one back as Aguirre split three players, drew the slide and found Nichlas Bui on the left wing for the step down low shot for 8-6 and CC made it a one goal game again at 2:18 as Diaz dodged from top left to the middle and found Perry lower in the middle for the turnaround shot as we went to the 4th with Boca up 8-7. The teams traded early goals in the fourth.  Frey scored on another EMO at 10:15 as Kigar cut from low left and took Frey’s top left wing pass for the open short side look.  CC got that back at 9:34 as Aguirre again found Bui on the left wing from top middle for the low step down and it was 9-8. But then it was all Boca, as they finished the game on a 5-0 run.  At 8:14, it was Eisenmann taking the Kigar feed in the middle.  Less than a minute later it was Brian DeBeer, the long pole, on a long run down the middle and hitting the low right side for 11-8.  At 5:19 it was Gavin Reed taking the Clinton behind the net feed as he cut down the middle for 12-8 and only 34 seconds later Eisenmann picked up the loose ball 8 yards out for the worm burner for 13-8 and Frey finished it off at 2:30 with a solo effort through the double team, finishing behind the back to put the exclamation point on the run. Boca Raton returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to Belen Jesuit and Columbus Catholic is also on the road Tuesday, going to University School.   Team Statistics   Faceoffs:  15 each Shots:  CC 34-27 Shots on Goal:  CC 19-17 Turnovers:  24 each Penalties:  BR 4 – CC 7   Individual Statistics   Boca Raton   Zach Frey  5G/3A Michael Clinton  3G/3A Christian Eisenmann  2G/1A Logan Kigar  1G/2A Mason Weidersum, Brian DeBeer and Gavin Reed  1G each   Spencer Dobkin with 11 saves   Columbus Catholic   Nicholas Bui  2G Andreas Aguirre  1G/2A Cole Quigley, Robert Perry and Alberto Diaz  1G/1A each Rafael Huguet and Ross Jimenez  1G each   Leo Guerra and Matt Corazon combined for 3 saves   Thanks to Coach Holly and Coach DeLang for talking to me before and after the game!
