via MLL press release   Boston (August 12, 2016)- Major League Lacrosse announced today that Charlotte Hounds Head Coach Jim Stagnitta has been named 2016 Brine Coach of the Year. Stagnitta coached the Hounds to an 8-6 record on the season and a fourth seeded playoff position. The award was based on the votes submitted by the head coach and general manager of each of the League’s nine teams. Stagnitta is in his first year as head coach for the Charlotte Hounds as he joined the coaching staff in April 2016. The 2016 season was significantly different from the 2015 season for the Charlotte Hounds. In 2015, the Hounds finished the regular season in last place in the League with a 3-11 record. It didn’t take long for Stagnitta to make his impact as he led the Hounds to a victory in their season-opener, beating the Boston Cannons 15-12 at home. This marked the first season-opener win in Charlotte’s history, dating back to 2012. Charlotte went on to win their next two games against the Rochester Rattlers and Florida Launch to start the season 3-0. During the season, Stagnitta worked with a young Hounds team, focusing on team ball offense and strong transition defense. Charlotte finished their first season under Stagnitta with the program’s best record to date at 8-6. With a comeback victory over the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the final game of the season, Charlotte clinched a fourth-seeded playoff berth and will play the Ohio Machine in the Semi-Finals on August 13 in Blaine, MN. While this is Stagnitta’s first year with the Hounds, he is no stranger to coaching in the MLL. During the 2012 and 2013 seasons, Stagnitta coached the Denver Outlaws and led them to two straight MLL Playoff appearances. In 2013, the Outlaws went a remarkable 14-0 during the regular season before being upset in the Semi-Finals by the Hounds. Stagnitta earned the League’s Coach of the Year Award in 2013 for his coaching and team success. After taking time to coach on the collegiate level, Stagnitta accepted the head coach position with the Hounds in early 2016. “I really enjoyed the coaching. I think the game is phenomenal and I enjoyed the guys. Sometimes you don’t realize how much you enjoy something or what a great coaching environment it is until you step away from it.”   2016 Brine Coach of the Year Voting Results The  Brine Coach of the Year is determined based on the total number of points each coach receives.
