BOCA RATON – In the first night game in the long history of Lynn University athletics, No. 14 Florida Southern took down the host Fighting Knights, 18-1, in Sunshine State Conference action at Bobby Campbell Stadium.

With their fourth consecutive win, the Moccasins improve to 8-3 on the season and 2-1 in the SSC as they look to improve their seeding for the approaching conference tournament. For the Fighting Knights, who are in their first year as a program, their record drops to 1-8 and 0-3 in the Sunshine State Conference.

Freshman Cody Dyer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) scored the game’s first goal at 11:28 of the opening period. Dyer assisted on the first goal from freshman Grant VanOverbeke (Rosemount, Min.), while the second goal from VanOverbeke came off a dish from senior Chris Murphy (Camillus, N.Y.) to put the score at 3-0 with plenty more Moccasin goals still to come.

Murphy set up Dyer for his second goal of the game before senior Shane Tompkins (Bear, Del.) put his name in the scorebook with a goal off a pass from Dyer to make it a 5-0 goal lead for FSC. VanOverbeke completed the hat-trick at 2:56 with junior Dane Sorensen (Victoria, British Columbia) on the assist, and freshman Andrew Fisher (Monkton, Md.) found the back of the net 44 seconds later for his first score of the evening. Florida Southern ended the first quarter leading 7-0 against an overmatched Fighting Knight squad.

Florida Southern’s eighth goal of the contest came off the stick of senior Kevin Naslonski (East Setauket, N.Y.) 43 seconds into the second quarter with VanOverbeke tallying his first assist of the quarter. Senior Dan Krispinsky (Fort Myers, Fla.) scored his second goal of the season in as many games off a face-off ground ball to put the Mocs up 10-0 with 14:11 still to play in the half.

The freshman from Minnesota assisted his second goal of the contest, this time feeding Tompkins, before Sorensen ripped a shot past the Lynn goalkeeper for his first goal of the game. With his 44th goal of the season, the Canadian tied the record for goals in a season with plenty of time still to go.

Fisher scored his second goal of the game off a feed from VanOverbeke put the score at 12-0. Dyer became the second Moccasin to score a hat-trick with 6:47 still to go in the half, and Fisher scored a hat-trick of his own at 4:50. Dyer netted goal number four off a pass from Sorensen with 1:00 to put Florida Southern up 15-0 going into halftime.

Sorensen netted goal number 45 1:41 into the third quarter, breaking the single-season goal record held by Cameron Holding for the past three seasons. Sorensen’s goal came off a pass from a pass from Tompkins, and was given the game ball shortly after it was retrieved from the net.

“It feels pretty good right now,” said Sorensen. “All the work in the off-season paid off. I wouldn’t have been able to do this without the other two guys [VanOverbeke and Dyer] on the attack.”

Redshirt junior Jeff Shields (Manlius, N.Y.) registered his first point of the season on an assist to senior Steven Boyle (Selden, N.Y.) at 6:40 to up the Mocs’ lead to 17-0. Freshman A.J. Carter (Naples, Fla.) score an unassisted goal to give Florida Southern an 18-0 lead going into the fourth and final quarter of play.

Having kept the Fighting Knights off the scoreboard for the previous three quarters, Lynn finally put a shot past a Florida Southern goalkeeper with 7:43 remaining in the game to prevent being shutout for the second time this season. The Knights were held scoreless in their previous SSC tilt, an 11-0 decision at the hands of the Lions of Saint Leo (7-4, 2-1) on Sat., Mar. 22. Boyle netted his second score of the day off a fast-break assist from seniorBrad Fretti (Coral Springs, Fla.) for the game’s final goal. The Mocs ran out the remainder of the clock, preserving their second conference victory.

Freshmen VanOverbeke and Dyer led the Moccasin offense with six points each, while Dyer scored a team-leading four goals. Krispinsky, in addition to his second-quarter goal, won 12-16 face-offs and scooped a team-best seven ground balls. Senior Nick Meyer (Ocean Township, N.J.) went 2-4 at the draw, while freshmanBlake Weil (Jacksonville, Fla.) was a perfect 3-3 in the face-off circle.

The Moccasins caused eight turnovers on the evening, with one caused turnover coming from eight seperate FSC players. All five Florida Southern goalkeepers made an appearance between the pipes in the blowout win, combining for nine saves. Freshman Matt Lalli (New Milford, Conn.) made three saves in 22:36 of action, while sophomore Logan Muether (Hilliard, Ohio) made five stops in 18:11, including a period when he stopped three Fighting Knight shots in a row. Freshman Austin Suarez (Fort Myers, Fla.) also played 8:29 in the game, while sophomore Daniel Rivas (Baldwin, N.Y.) made one save in 4:48 of time, and senior Pete Lowrey (Tampa, Fla.) played the final 5:56 of the game.

Tyler Janvrin scored Lynn’s lone goal of the contest, while the freshman picked up three ground balls in the loss. On the defensive end, Chase Ostermann forced three FSC turnovers. Picking up the loss for the Fighting Knights was Tyler Ferrino, who made 14 saves in 42:22 between the pipes. Jason Conner also made a relief appearance for Lynn, making seven saves in the final 17:38 of the game.

The Moccasins return to Bryant Stadium for the final two SSC games of the regular season. Florida Southern first hosts Saint Leo on Saturday, April 5, at 7 p.m. in what will most likely determine the second-seed of the conference tournament. The Mocs then honor their seniors on April 12 when they welcome Florida Tech (2-8, 0-3) to Lakeland.
