FLN has asked new Head Coach Doug Shanahan of St. Brendan High School in Miami to share his thoughts on how he is building his new program through their inaugural season. Here is his fourth submission! We thank Doug for taking the time to do this and letting our readers experience this unique insight.
(please note we received this before his first game and am publishing it a little late)
This past week had many ups and downs as any new varsity program would. Practice was filled with many new principles and understanding that the boys need to continually be exposed to. With every new drill and situation there is always an adjustment period, some periods are longer than others depending on the player. I have to continually remind myself that this is just the beginning of something special.
With the help of the parent committee we are finalizing volunteers for each game to bring snacks and drinks, we have great support and I am very appreciative of that fact.
As we are now in game week for the first time in our program’s history, I am happy we played in the Pope Cup this past weekend. It was truly a great experience playing Friday night at Pope John Paul and getting a victory versus John Carroll. The team needed to experience the taste of victory. It was a good rallying point for the program as we knew that Saturday would be much tougher for us, and it was. Even though the scores were very lop-sided in our games versus Pope and Cardinal Gibbons it was still another great experience for this program. As there is no time like game time, trying to match the speed and stick work of both teams should help us in our opener tomorrow at South Plantation 7pm.
Today’s will be a lighter practice where we focus on the detail of tomorrow’s game plan and address the mistakes made over the weekend. It a “Polish Day”.
