FLN has asked new Head Coach Doug Shanahan of St. Brendan High School in Miami to share his thoughts on how he is building his new program through their inaugural season. Here is his fifth submission! We thank Doug for taking the time to do this and letting our readers experience this unique insight.
Week #5
With a game under our belt and little extra time for more practices (since our game had to be rescheduled at North Broward Prep to this Thursday at 5pm) , we are looking for a vastly different team to be on the field then the one that competed in our 13-9 loss to South Plantation last week.
In any competitive sport the biggest growth is from game one to game two in the beginning of the season. We as a staff are hoping that holds true. Coach Robinson is a long-time associate of mine and both he and Coach Alpert have really ingrained the fundamentals into the team’s memories.
Practices have been highly competitive and scenario driven. Every drill is simulated from transition to decision, this is where our growth has to be now as a first year program. We still touch on fundamental stick work as that is a necessity, especially in a fledgling program, however our focus is now on understanding of the game and its’ pieces and how this relates to every player’s role. Basically if I do this, then we can achieve our goals.
Teaching patience and a controlled attack is something that I don’t think will be accomplished this year, but we are working at it so it happens as soon as possible. The hold up on control is upper level skill and understanding. Our boys are always ready to learn, the recall in split second decisions is the piece that is missing. This is learned through thousands of reps and experience. We will get there. We are looking forward to Thursday’s game at NBP.
