Eastside Mourns the Loss of Head Coach Paul Hollis

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
When we began FloridaLacrosseNews.com years ago we knew very little about the lacrosse scene in Gainesville.  It became apparent early on that two people we needed to know in Gainesville were Bernadette and Paul Hollis. I got a call from Bernadette yesterday and instead of finding out about a new fundraiser or tournament I got some very shocking and upsetting news. Paul had passed away. Coach Hollis had been with Eastside since 2012 and had been the head coach since the 2013 season.  We last spoke with Paul after the Oak Hall vs Eastside game last year.  He was constantly working to develop his guys and they always played the game hard and with class.
After watching that game I wrote, “Eastside head coach Paul Hollis is widely respected as one of the good guys in the Gainesville lacrosse scene and his guys reflected that.”
Coach Hollis was dedicated to continuing the efforts started by his predecessor, Chuck Rogan, to celebrate the life of Sarah Landauer.  Sarah was a star athlete and student at Eastside High School whose life was cut short in 2012.  He and Bernadette were instrumental in continuing the annual SMiLe Tournament each year. Eastside recently suffered another tragedy when one of Coach Hollis’ former players, Landon Rogers, past away.  The freshman at UF died suddenly during an ROTC training exercise in late November. According to the Gainesville Sun, Coach Hollis suffered a choking accident while eating dinner.  He was taken to Shands Hospital where he was put on life support but was unable to recover.

“Such a humble spirit, a great coach, a great professional,” Eastside athletic director Doris Raven said. “If he said he was going to do something it was done. Eastside for sure has had its share of losses. This is a great loss. We want to make sure we can uplift and brighten Bernadette’s life here in Gainesville. We are grieving with her.”

We have always appreciated the support we received from Paul and are very sorry for Bernadette’s loss.   Coach Hollis was a dedicated coach and teacher.  His students and players will surely miss him.
