District 22
District 22 has been the Melbourne Central Catholic story over the past number of years as they have won the district and advanced at least a round of the FHSAA playoffs for a while. 32 wins in their last 33 regular season games. With the move of Holy Trinity back to their district there will be some true competition. Melbourne High closed the gap a little last year in their head to head games but didn’t really threaten either time.
MCC got past Merritt Island last season in the first round before bowing out to the Jupiter juggernaut and that finished a season where they went 10-8, as they lost to some of the teams they had beat in their 2014 magical season. Early losses up in the northeast to Ponte Vedra, Bolles, etc., at least got the team ready for the district and the closest to a breakthrough came late in a 10-9 OT loss at Martin County.
Coach Eric Hall enters his second year at the helm.
Holy Trinity Episcopal went 10-5 last season and was only 6 goals shy of a perfect regular season record as no loss was by more than 2 goals. They gave up double digits only twice and their outlook is to find a way to get a few more goals for.
Coach Mike Leary has quietly developed a solid program and will step up the schedule this year with Vero Beach on the road to finish the regular season.
Melbourne High went 8-6 last season but were also handled easily by the better teams, with the exception of taking Rockledge down to the wire at home. And now they are looking at what is likely a much tougher first round district playoff game.
Head Coach Mark Fields will try to continue their wining ways.
Sebastian River went 4-10 last season and 2-3 in district to finish third before losing their district playoff game. The team is looking to improve on both sides of the ball as they gave up double digits in goals in 11 of the 14 games.
Coach Sean Stinger enters his fourth season at the helm and noted MCC was the team to beat. He highlighted Dan Ramos-senior defender, Joel Vacchiano-senior midfielder and Justice Bragg-sophomore attackman as players to watch.
West Shore enters the season also off a 4-10 record, losing out to Sebastian 14-10 in their head to head meeting. It looks like both teams will be battling each other for that last district spot this season. They showed some offensive capability against the weaker teams on the schedule but also would have to cut goals against substantially to improve on their record.
Third year head coach Dan O’Halloran will seek improvement at every position.
Eau Gallie welcomes new head coach Mitchell Sullivan to help the program take their first steps up the ladder. Last year’s 2-12 record showed only 2 wins over Cocoa on the positive side. Goals for and against need drastic improvement.
Coach Sullivan will have his work cut out for him.
