FHSAA Season Preview – District 5

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
This year the preview is being brought to you by the Lacrosse News Network Florida Classic.  This fantastic event is schedule for February 27th and is headlined by the oldest rivalry in college sports, Cornell vs Hobart Men’s Lacrosse.  The big game is flanked by Oxbridge vs Saint Andrews and Benjamin vs Lake Highland LNN_Florida_Classic_Logo_Final-01_optPrep. Mandarin has got to be considered the favorite in this district. The Mustangs were in the goofy three team district with Bolles and Fleming Island last season but they did play Atlantic Coast, Sandalwood, and Fletcher winning all three games. Senior Captain Tyler Torrente (Wingate) anchors this defense. Look for Jared Kane to  be an offensive threat from both the middie and attack positions.  While only a sophomore he has already been named a captain. Head Coach Jeff Hawkins has surveyed the landscape in his new district.  “Providence, in our district, will be the team to beat.  I expect we’ll meet them in the district championship this season.”  He said that his guys also always enjoy playing Fletcher which is a big rivalry game.  The Mustangs travel to Fletcher on February 23. The strength for Providence School  will definitely be on the defensive side of the ball this year.  Senior defensemen Spencer Awad and Nick Pitre will anchor a much improved defense. On the offensive side of the ball junior attackmen Jared Silvey and Austin Otwell are the guys who the team is looking to for firepower. Look for big contributions from newcomers Ian Anderson (sophomore LSM) and Cade McCann (sophomore A/M).  We would not be surprised to hear about college commitments coming from Awad and Pitre soon. Coach Brian Theiss is looking forward to a couple of trips “home” to Orlando this season.  Coach Theiss was the long time coach at Lake Brantley High School.  “We’re making two trips to Orlando. One versus Apopka – should be a good game for us. Coach Frost and Coach Spek have done a wonderful job there over the years and I’m glad to call them friends. The other is versus Winter Springs – meaningful to me as I know a lot of people there still and it’s where I got my first varsity head coaching job. Good memories there.” Sandalwood is led by a pair of senior attackmen.  Mitch Aldrich is an experienced player with solid fundamentals.  He can dodge and is very dangerous from X.  Jake Babadi, a two sport athlete, is a big, powerful attackman who can shoot from either side. The captain on the defensive end is Derek Pridham.  The junior has a great stick and good checks.  He draws the tough assignments for Sandalwood this season.  Nicholas Tatum is a junior goalie who has really stepped up his game this preseason and gets the start between the pipes  this year. These guys have a great rivalry with Feltcher and you can bet that the March 4th date is circled on the calendar. Atlantic Coast finished 4-4 in the district last year, falling to Providence in the district final.  With Mandarin in the mix this year the road to the final just got a little tougher.  Fletcher (5-10 last season) rounds out this district.
