FHSAA’s Sports Medicine Advisory Committee Minutes Show NO DISCUSSION OF HELMET ISSUE

In the ever-growing kerfuffle of the FHSAA’s ruling in favor of requiring head gear for Girls Lacrosse, another questionable part of the process has come to light. The FHSAA utilizes a Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, staffed with doctors and others and from around the state.  There are 15 members currently, including Robert Sefcik, who was instrumental in helping those in favor of the ruling to drive the process forward. You would think that this issue would have been front and center in the discussions of that advisory committee. You would be wrong . . .  According  to the minutes of the SMAC meetings, there was NO DISCUSSION at all of the issue.   SMAC 100813   (October 8, 2013) SMAC 012114  (January Volume Pills 21st, 2014) SMAC 031114  (March 11th, 2014)   The latest meeting of the SMAC occurred 8/26/14 and the agenda does not indicate any discussions either: SMAC 082614   How the SPORTS MEDICINE ADVISORY COMMITTEE could not be a part of this is incredible.  The FHSAA has some explaining to do.   However, there are a couple of things in those minutes that FLN will be investigating, particularly the March 11th meeting where there was a discussion of the SMAC and an organization named FASMed potentially merging; an issue that did draw dissent from some of the committee members.  We will be researching this organization to see what role, if any, they played in this process.
