FIT Women: Nine-Goal First Half Allows Panthers to Cruise to Victory

MELBOURNE, Fla. (Women’s Lacrosse) – Coming off its first victory of the season, Florida Tech (4-1) bounced-back by pouncing all over Young Harris (4-4) in the first half en route to a 16-9 victory Friday night at Florida Tech Panther Stadium.
Sara Grenier paced FIT with a season-high seven points on five goals and two assists. Mary Gormley scored a hat trick to go along with one assist and Caroline Dunleavy added two goals and an assist. Allie Modica and Sarah Kapinos each found the back of the net twice in the game.
The teams would exchange the first two scores with Maddie Peek’s being the equalizer for YHC with 26:43 left in the first half. Consecutive free possession tallies by Grenier gave FIT a 3-1 advantage at the 19:39 mark of the first half. Jaclyn Kernohan would score to bring the margin back to one before the Panthers embarked on a 6-0 run to close the half with a 9-2 advantage.
Modica’s first of the game increased Florida Tech’s edge to 10-2 before Erika Cross cut the Mountain Lions’ deficit back to seven with 27:04 remaining. The Panthers’ lead increased to double-digits, 13-3, on consecutive goals by Dunleavey, Kapinos and Grenier at the 21:42 mark.
Young Harris went on to score six of the remaining nine goals of the contest, including five alone by Kendra Parenteau, to bring the deficit to seven before the final whistle.
The Panthers outshot the Mountain Lions 28-16 while ending with a 30-21 advantage in ground balls. YHC did collect more draw controls (14-11) but managed to turn the ball over six more times in the game (27-21).
Parenteau led YHC with five goals while Jaclyn Kernohan two goals and an assist. Peek and Cross each tallied one score in the loss.
Florida Tech returns to action on Monday, March 14 as the Panthers host No. 4 New Haven at 7 p.m. ET at Florida Tech Panther Stadium. Last season the Chargers routed FIT 18-4 on March 16, 2015 in Melbourne.
