FIT Women: Offense Looks to Continue Rolling Versus Indiana (Pa.)

(Women’s Lacrosse) – Florida Tech has really been impressive through the first two games of the season, winning by an average margin of 6.5 goals per game against two North Region opponents. The Panthers will look to continue rolling when they square off with Indiana (Pa.) Saturday at noon ET at Florida Tech Panther Stadium. The offense took no time shaking off the early-season rust, scoring 30 total goals in its two victories. Sara Grenier has accounted for nine of those tallies and is tied for the team lead with two assists. Allie Modica and Caroline Dunleavy have each recorded seven points on six goals and an assist. The defense has been no slouch either. After giving up 11 goals in the season opener against Roberts Wesleyan, the backline tightened up versus Chestnut Hill, limiting the Griffins to just six goals overall and none in the second half. Haley Heggblod, Arielle Gunderson and Allie Wood have combined for 14 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers. Helping propel Florida Tech to new levels this season has been the play of the newcomers on the team, who have really hit the ground running in their first two collegiate games. Sam Schiano has been a true force at the midfield and leads the team in groundballs (10), draw controls (8) and caused turnovers (6) while also notching three goals and one assist. Fellow rookies Sarah Kapinos and Jordan Grant have registered two goals and one assist apiece to complement Brittney Embree’s four caused turnovers and two ground balls on the defensive end. Saturday’s contest will be the season opener for Indiana (Pa.), who finished 10-8 overall with an 8-4 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, a year ago. Amy Weinberg quarterbacked IUP’s offense with 79 points last season, including an NCAA-best 67 assists. Kim Hooven was the main benefactor, scoring a team-leading 52 goals to go along with seven assists while Bailey McLeish ranked second on the team in both goals (34) and assists (15). Angela Lontoc is back for the Crimson Hawks after starting 15-of-18 games in goal, earning a record of 9-5 in 2015. Mindy Richmond is in her eighth season at the helm of the IUP program.
