FIT Women: Panthers Fall to Lions 13-11

(Women’s Lacrosse) – Florida Tech (7-8, 1-3 SSC) came up short in its matchup against Saint Leo (9-7, 2-2 SSC) on Wednesday at University Turf Stadium. After falling behind early, the Panthers came back in the second half to take the lead, but eventually ran out of steam in a 13-11 loss to the Lions. Freshman Sara Grenier paced FIT with three goals, while fellow classmate Caroline Dunleavy and sophomore Heather Roache each finished with two goals and one assist. Sophomore Allie Modica scored two goals and juniorJulia Kantor and senior Jenni Juliano added one goal apiece. Freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Stuart recorded 13 saves, two groundballs and one caused turnover in the loss. Saint Leo opened the game with goals by Allie Sheftall and Abbie Ross to take a 2-0 lead with 25:05 remaining in the first half. Roache drove past her defender and fired in the Panthers’ first goal of the game. Modica found the back of the net 17 seconds later to tie the game at 2-2. The Lions tallied four straight goals to push their lead to 6-2 with 8:14 left in the first half, but FIT answered with consecutive goals by Juliano and Kantor. Saint Leo responded with a goal by Caroline Fraser to increase its advantage, however, Modica scored with two seconds remaining to make it a two goal game heading into halftime. The Panthers scored four straight goals to open the second half, including a true hat trick by Grenier, to give FIT a 9-7 lead with 22:09 remaining in the game. The Lions answered with three consecutive tallies in less than a minute to jump back ahead 10-9. Florida Tech snatched back the lead with goals by Dunleavy and Roache, but Saint Leo closed the game on a 3-0 run to steal the victory away from the Panthers. Florida Tech now enters the inaugural Sunshine State Conference Tournament as the No. 4 seed. The Panthers will face the No. 1 seed Florida Southern on Friday at 6 p.m. All SSC Tournament games will be played at Florida Southern in Lakeland, Florida.
