MELBOURNE, Fla. (Women’s Lacrosse) – After scoring a combined 43 goals in its previous three games, Florida Tech (6-2) could not manage a single tally in the first half against No. 13 Dowling (5-1) on Sunday, as it eventually fell to the Golden Lions15-4 at Florida Tech Panther Stadium.
This is the first time in the two-years of the program that FIT was held without a goal in the first half, while the four tallies marked a new season-low for the Panthers.
FIT took a season-low 18 shots against the Golden Lions, but it was not the quantity of the attempts that was the issue on Sunday, instead it was the placement. Most of the opportunities the Panthers got in the contest they would finish with a shot right into the stick of DC’s goalkeeper Lauren Young, who recorded 11 saves in the game.
Opposite Young, Stephanie Stuart made eight saves for Florida Tech while being pelted with 23 total shots, including 13 right on the doorstep in the first half.
Caroline Dunleavy scored a hat trick for the Panthers while Sara Grenier contributed the other goal and one assist. Haley Heggblod picked up a team-high four ground balls and Allie Modica collected three ground balls in addition to a team-high six draw controls. Modica and Sam Schiano each caused three turnovers in the contest.
Emma Ferreira’s free position goal at the 26:56 mark kicked off the Golden Lions’ 10-0 run in the first half. From there they went on to score the next nine goals over a span of 17:25 to force running time with more than nine minutes remaining before halftime.
Dunleavy finally got FIT on the board in the second half with consecutive free position goals to make it 10-2 with 28:24 left. However, DC would put a halt to the Panthers’ momentum with a four-goal run over the next 15 minutes to increase its advantage to 14-2 at the 9:44 mark.
After forcing a turnover on a DC man-up try, Grenier would find Dunleavy on the ensuing fast break for a man-down goal to make it 14-3 with less than seven minutes left. Grenier then tallied the Panthers’ fourth goal on a speed dodge from the wing to get the game to its final score with 1:16 remaining.
Alyssa Milano paced the Golden Lions with five goals on six shots. Karie Znaniecki and Brooke Kreuscher each finished with four points. Znaniecki recorded three goals and an assist while Kreuscher contributed one goal and three assists. Ferreira added a hat trick and Katie Meinecke tallied two goals and one assist to go along with six draw controls.
Florida Tech has little time to dwell on the loss as it will be back in action Tuesday against St. Michael’s at 7 p.m. ET at Florida Tech Panther Stadium.
